The Snow White Legend Comes Alive
Movie: Mirror Mirror

Director: Tarsem Singh
Starring: Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer and Nathan Lane

I was privileged to attend an advance showing of the latest Snow White offering, Mirror Mirror, which opens March 30th, not the 16th as the poster suggests. We settled in with our popcorn, drinks and Pizza Hut, because the Larry Miller Megaplexes in Utah have wonderful restaurants in the actual theaters and you can take dinner straight into the theater and watch the movie in style!

I’ll admit right up front, I’m a longtime fan of Julia Roberts. A brilliant actress, there seems to be no role she cannot tackle, and the evil stepmother to Snow White is no exception. She plays the role with great wit, charm and and underlying evil too blatant to deceive any viewer, which is the whole point. Julia brings a freshness to the role that had me laughing throughout the movie. Of course, the way she stays young … yeah, I was grossed out. I’ll admit it. Read More

Senator Mike Lee Endorses Mitt Romney for POTUS

Senator Mike Lee Endorses Mitt Romney for President

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SALT LAKE CITY – Today, Senator Mike Lee endorsed Governor Mitt Romney for President.

“I am confident Mitt Romney is guided by strong conservative principles and that as President he will seek to restore constitutionally limited government," said Lee. "Governor Romney was the first Republican presidential candidate to support the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act, a conservative approach that would put the country on the path to fiscal sustainability. Mitt understands that excessive government regulation stifles economic prosperity, and I believe he will provide critical leadership that the country desperately needs. We must defeat President Obama and undo the damage caused by his administration, and I believe Mitt Romney is the right man for the job. I am proud to endorse Mitt Romney for President and will encourage fellow conservatives to do the same.”

Of the endorsement, Governor Romney said, “I am proud to have the support of Mike Lee. His endorsement comes at an important time for our campaign. Mike is one of the leading conservatives in the country and has fought tirelessly for the principles of limited government, individual liberty, and constitutional conservatism. His counsel will be important as we work to repeal Obamacare and restore fiscal responsibility.”

The Truth About Mitt Romney and the SLC Olympics

TO ALL: Mike Leavitt was the 14th Governor of Utah. Below is his response to Rick Santorum regarding the 2002 Olympics.

Mike Leavitt
Guest columnist

Contrary to what Rick Santorum says, Mitt Romney was responsible for turning around the 2002 Winter Olympics, writes Mike Leavitt.

Thanks to some charges leveled by former Sen. Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney's stewardship of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games has become the subject of a curious controversy. Among other things, Santorum has suggested that Mitt succeeded thanks only to a "federal bailout." As I was governor of Utah at the time, I'm in a unique position to set the record straight.

Here are the facts:

Four years before the Games were to begin, they got caught up in a scandal. Sponsors began to withdraw and the budget of the Games was nearly $400 million over anticipated expenditures. A new leader was needed. Utah was at risk financially and I personally engaged in the search for the right person. I found Mitt Romney, who had a distinguished career in business, helping to start new companies and turn around failing ones.

Within weeks of his arrival, Mitt had laid out a revitalized vision for the Games. Mitt assembled a new team to bring the budget under control. I repeatedly heard him explain that if the budget was to be balanced, every spending request had to be divided into needs and wants. He called on the people of Utah to volunteer to close the gap. I'll never forget the ad he placed in Utah papers. It read: "Help wanted; hard work, no pay, better hurry." Fifty thousand people responded.

When the Games had concluded, they were an unqualified success. In a world still reeling from the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, people across the globe were assured that they could gather in safety to celebrate the highest qualities of the human family. Mitt Romney's leadership had turned the $400 million deficit into a $100 million surplus. It was a spectacular turnaround. Sen. Santorum's suggestion that only a "federal bailout" made all this possible is flatly wrong. We looked to the federal government only to assist with security and necessary infrastructure. Throughout, Mitt did the right thing, and he did it extraordinarily well.

After the Olympic Games had concluded, Mitt Romney returned to Massachusetts where he was elected governor. His state had a $3 billion deficit and the economy needed a turnaround. With the same discipline he used in business and the Olympics, at the end of four years he turned it into a $2 billion rainy-day fund.

The bottom line is this: The profile of the person we were looking for to rescue the Olympics matches almost perfectly what United States needs in our next president. We need a leader who can return us to fiscal responsibility, discern between those things that are needs and wants, and inspire a demoralized people to believe again. Mitt Romney is a leader who can do those things, and more.

Leavitt served as Utah's governor from 1993-2003.

Senator Mike Lee Opposes Nomination of Hurwitz to Ninth Circuit Court

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lee Opposes Nomination of Hurwitz to Ninth Circuit Court

Today, Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) shared the following statement in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing regarding Andrew Hurwitz, President Obama's nominee to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals:

"I oppose the nomination of Andrew Hurwitz based on concerns I have with his constitutional jurisprudence.  In a 2002 New York Law School Law Review article, Mr. Hurwitz in effect took credit for helping develop the legal architecture for Roe v. Wade.  Mr. Hurwitz served as law clerk to then-Judge Jon Newman at a time that Judge Newman issued an opinion that Mr. Hurwitz asserts played an important role in developing the legal framework used to justify Roe v. Wade.  Far from deflecting credit from himself as the clerk in chambers during that time, as I believe a former clerk should, Mr. Hurwitz recounted that, in a subsequent interview for a subsequent clerkship, a Supreme Court justice had “jokingly referred” to him as “the clerk who wrote the Newman opinion.”

"Mr. Hurwitz has asserted that his law review article was descriptive and did not express his personal opinion as to the merits of Roe v. Wade, but to anyone who has reviewed Mr. Hurwitz’s article and the laudatory tone with which it discusses that Supreme Court opinion, this response is simply not credible.  Mr. Hurwitz specifically praised Judge Neuman’s “careful and meticulous analysis of the constitutional issues,” calling that analysis “striking, even in the hindsight of thirty years.”

"Mr. Hurwtiz cannot have it both ways.  He cannot seek credit for his role developing a jurisprudence that is completely unmoored from the Constitution and that has fundamentally disrespected human life, and then later claim that he was only retelling a story as an outside observer.  There is growing consensus among legal experts and scholars, both conservative and liberal, that Roe was a deficient opinion that lacks any legitimate legal reasoning in support of its holding.

"Mr. Hurwitz’s willful failure to recognize the grave deficiencies of the Roe opinion, and his self-promotion for playing a part in such an unfortunate event in this country’s judicial history, casts an unacceptable degree of doubt on his capability to serve in the role of a federal appellate judge.

"Prior to President Obama’s unconstitutional “recess” appointments, I gave his judicial nominees great deference. Both in the Judiciary Committee and on the Senate floor, I have voted in favor of the vast majority of the President’s nominees, including many with whom I fundamentally disagree. But I can do so no more.  There is and must be a new standard for the President’s judicial nominations.  A standard under which a problematic and controversial nominee such as Mr. Hurwitz cannot receive my support."
