It's That Time of Year Again! Everything Broadway!

It's that time of year again, and I am excited! The Twist & Shout Concert is this Friday, July 1st - and it is Everything Broadway! You will love what Heather has planned for this 60 minute concert!

Here's the link to the interview Heather Hunt, my sister and director of Twist & Shout, did on Buy Back America. She is 30 minutes into the show, and I spoke to her for 30 minutes. I hope you will invite everyone you know to join us on July 1st. We are going to have so much fun!

This is a family friendly event lasting precisely 60 minutes. Heather is a stickler for not having a concert go longer than that.

We are having many rehearsals and I have to say, the men of Twist & Shout are hysterical. The guys are singing three numbers from the musical Spamalot, one of them with us, the women. They are so funny it's difficult to keep singing at times. They are working with the theory if they do all the funny stuff at every rehearsal we'll become immune to it. Not working yet, but we're trying hard!

Heather Hunt and Sara Terry sound AMAZING as they rehearse "Loathing" from Wicked. Wow, are you in for a treat! I heard them sing it, for the first time this way around, last night. I was blown away!

Then Sara Terry's "Diva's Lament" from Spamalot is priceless beyond measure. I keep giggling through it as she performs, so I'm certain you will too.

The adults are also singing "Season of Love" from Rent. And if I do say so myself ... we're rockin' it!

And then Ryann Race of "So You Think You Can Dance" will be performing with our own Eric Burton, of The Fabulous Burton Boys!

Throw in the kids of Twist & Shout, and we have a fun evening planned for our audience.

So again, I hope you have invited your family and friends to join us that evening. We have a 500+ seat auditorium and room for everyone.

Date: July 1, 2011
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Place: American Leadership Academy
1172 Del Monte Rd
Spanish Fork, UT 84660-9245

Add a comment if you have any questions. And do not forget, the event is FREE, although we won't turn anyone down who wants to donate to the arts. Yeah, I'm smiling.

Have a great evening and see you all Friday night!

The Candace E. Salima Daily

Here's a fun little app geared toward my tweets! It's called paper li and it creates an electronic newspaper from 24 hours of my tweets, every day. How fun is that!

As I've gone from author, to businesswoman, to publisher, to short-lived TV host, to radio talk show host, I've been amazed at the twist and turns my life has taken.

Really, life throws curves at us sometimes that knock us down and can keep us down if we're not determined to get back up. It could be a financial, illness, legal, friends, or family juggernaut. But I really believe, regardless of what comes our way, that if we kneel in prayer morning and night, remember to turn to the scriptures for our inspiration and answers, stay fully aware of life going on around us, both the good and the bad, that we can make it through just about anything.

For me life revolves around my religion, my family, my hopes, my dreams and aspirations. I blog, tweet, and Facebook that which I am comfortable sharing publicly, the rest remains between my family and me, and even some just between God and me.

I have an upcoming concert, which has me involved in many last-minute rehearsals. I would never give it up, no matter how busy I become. It is one hour every Saturday morning filled with song, dance, and laughter, not to mention the camaraderie of some of the finest men and women I know.

The Twist & Shout concert is just around the corner (and it's free as a nod to the current state of the economy,) July 1st, and it is an exciting time. I'm singing with the adult class, songs from Rent and Spamalot, and I have to say we are rockin' that stage! And yes, much hilarity has ensued. Heather Hunt, my sister, and Sara Terry are performing a masterful rendition of Loathing from Wicked. And Sara Terry is knocking it out of the park with Diva's Lament from Spamalot, very funny. Ryann Race from So You Think You Can Dance will be performing with Eric Burton of the Fabulous Burton Boys. The rest of the age groups are singing from many other Broadway shows, and they are stinkin' cute!

It is a fun 60 minutes of song, laughter, and dance which is the perfect family evening! I hope those of you in the Utah area will give yourselves a break, and join us. I promise, you will enjoy it!

July 1st, 7:00 p.m.
American Leadership Academy Auditorium
1172 Del Monte Rd
Spanish Fork, UT

But on to other aspects of my life.

Buy Back America airs every single day, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. MDT on Utah's KTALK AM 630. It is also streamed live on the internet for those outside of our listening area. You may listen to any show after it has aired on the show archives.

Preparing for this show is challenging, but fun for one such as I who craves knowledge, has a deep and abiding love of God and country, and I enjoy co-hosting Buy Back America with Tim Aalders, the creator and host of the show. We talk of Main Street, America, politics, books, music, economics, history, pretty much anything that strikes our fancy. With a 33% increase in listenership over the last quarter, and 1.5 million listeners and growing, not to mention Tim's new show on Salt Lake's newest television station KPDR 19.1, the reality show and the documentary of our national bus tour ... let's just say, I honestly never saw this coming, but have grabbed onto it with everything in me.

Many who know me, read my blog or are my Facebook friend, follow me on Twitter, or listen to my show, know how deeply and irrevocably I love America. One of the greatest things about working with Tim Aalders is the way he thinks out of the box. That thinking produced the Delcaration of Restoration, a message to the U.S. federal government:

It was  such an honor to spend two days working with these every day Americans to lay out our concerns to Washington, D.C. I proudly stand with each of them, and everyone who signs this Declaration of Restoration on our website, as work together to remind America what the Founding Fathers envisioned for us. To learn more about this, and what Buy Back America is all about, please visit our website and join us in this amazing effort to restore America to that which made it great.

Our dreams in life are often ethereal and hard to grasp. For me, dreams have always been put down on paper and a plan mapped out to achieve them. Some are achieved, and some are not. Some begin, fade away, and are replaced with a stronger, more durable dream, which is what Buy Back America has become for me.

So all in all, I'm happy with my life. I awaken every day ready to take on the new challenges and fight hard for my marriage, my family, my God, and my country. I think, all in all, I'm living the American dream with all its challenges and triumphs!

Passage of Resolution to Repeal H.B.116 Not a Referendum on Church

Republican Delegate Passage of Resolution to Repeal H.B.116 was NOT a Referendum on the LDS Church

I have read through almost all the comments attached to articles in all the papers in Utah, even commented on many of them. I am one of those state delegates who voted to repeal H.B.116. In fact, I co-sponsored the resolution, and I spoke in support of the resolution with Keri Witte and Arturo Morales Llan to the general body of the Utah Republican Party.

I would like to make something very, very clear. I am a Latter-day Saint who has a deep and abiding testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I am not only proud to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I draw great strength, support, and am deeply inspired on a daily basis by the teachings.

The passage of the Resolution to Repeal H.B.116 at yesterday's convention was not, in any way, shape, or form, a referendum on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or any other church. Churches should only ever be concerned with the salvation of souls, and should have no borders.

However, The Church has been very, if not excruciatingly, clear about the following:
  • They respect the right of nations to enforce and protect their borders.
  • They recognize that an unchecked flow of illegal immigrants into the nation will destabilize America.
  • They specifically asked that all members not cross borders illegally, overstay visas, or reside in nations illegally. (Source: http://newsroom.lds.org/article/immigration-church-issues-new-statement)
  • They have, in the past, been very clear that they want members to remain in their home nations and build the Gospel there.
  • They have also asked that illegal immigrants be treated with compassion, and I have no problem with that. We can enforce the law, uphold the U.S. Constitution without being vicious or obnoxious about it.
Yesterday's victory at the GOP Convention in Sandy, UT was about upholding the U.S. Constitution as the rule of law in America, as well as re-establishing the desire the delegates have for our elected officials to abide by the Republican Party Platform. It was nothing more, nothing less.

It is my hope the legislators in Utah will realize how strongly the people feel about this, repeal H.B.116 and start over, crafting legislation that will remain within the bounds of the U.S. Constitution.

Host: Tim Aalders
Co-Host: Candace Salima
Guest: Chris Stewart

On June 20th, Tim Aalders and I will be interviewing author Chris Stewart on Buy Back America Radio. I, for one, am very excited. I'm a big fan of his writing, and have all of his books, I think. However, his latest book blows them all out of the park. 7 Tipping Points that Saved the World. Wow, what a book! Put it on your calendar and be sure to tune in!
"Imagine a world with the means of mass destruction--nuclear warheads, biological weapons, chemical and conventional attacks--held only in the hands of despotic men and governments.
"Imagine a world, for example, with another Adolf Hitler or Joseph Stalin in command of much of Europe and all of Asia. Imagine such a man holding all this power, along with all of the other potentially destructive technological developments of the past forty years, without the counterbalance of free governments like those in Western Europe and the United States that have proven willing to stand up to tyranny and oppression.
"Imagine tyrannical governments with the modern-day capability to monitor, track, harass, suppress, and persecute their own people, their neighbors, their enemies, all without a group of nations willing to stand as light of freedom against oppressive leaders. Consider what our world might be like--what our world would be like--without the overwhelmingly positive influence of modern democracies.

"Then ask yourself this question: Have democratic governments saved this world?
"A world without free nations that were willing to sacrifice their blood and treasure to support the idea that men should be free would be a very different world from the one we live in today." (Chris Stewart & Ted Stewart, 7 Tipping Points that Saved the World, p. vii)
CHRIS STEWART is a bestselling author who has published more than a dozen books, has been selected by the Book of the Month Club, and has released titles in multiple languages in seven countries. He has also been a guest editorialist for the Detroit News, among other publications, commenting on matters of military readiness and national security concerns. He is a world-record-setting Air Force Pilot (fastest nonstop flight around the world) and president and CEO of The Shipley Group, a nationally recognized consulting and training company.

TED STEWART was appointed a United States District Court Judge in 1999 by President Bill Clinton. Prior to that, he served as chief of staff to Governor Michael O. Leavitt, as executive director of the State Department of Natural Resources, as a member and chair of the Public Service Commission, and as chief of staff to Congressman Jim Hansen. He has been a visiting professor at two state universities, teaching coures in law and public policy.

CHRIS AND TED STEWART are also the authors of the bestselling book Seven Miracles That Saved America: Why They Matter and Why We Should Have Hope, winner of the national Award for Public Communications from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge.

Be sure and tune in. It promises to be a fascinating interview!

How unusual is it, really, in the history of all known human experience, to enjoy the blessings of living free? The answer may surprise you. In The Miracle of Freedom, Chris and Ted Stewart make a strong case that fewer than 5 percent of all people who have ever lived on the earth have lived under conditions that we could consider free.

So where did freedom come from, and how are we fortunate enough to experience it in our day? A deeper look at the human record, write the authors, reveals a series of critical events, obvious forks in the road leading to very different outcomes, that resulted in this extraordinary period in which we live. They identify and discuss seven decisive tipping points:

1. The defeat of the Assyrians in their quest to destroy the kingdom of Judah
2. The victory of the Greeks over the Persians at Thermopylae and Salamis
3. Roman Emperor Constantine's conversion to Christianity
4. The defeat of the armies of Islam at Poitiers
5. The failure of the Mongols in their effort to conquer Europe
6. The discovery of the New World
7. The Battle of Britain in World War II

The journey to freedom has been thousands of years long. Now that it has found its place in the world, the question for those of us who experience its benefits is simply this: Will we work to preserve the miracle of freedom that we enjoy today?

Acclaimed Author Steve Berry Talks Turning Faliure into Success

I am thrilled that Tim and I will be interviewing NYT best-selling author, Steve Berry on our Buy Back America radio show on June 7th. I adored his latest book: The Jefferson Key. It was a page-turner that kept me up until the wee hours of the morning. It's a must-read and I recommend it to one and all!

I found a wonderful article on Steve Berry, where he talks about turning failure into success. I really wanted to share with my fellow bloggers. It is good.

So I'm stepping away from politics for the moment, and delving back into the world of literacy which is my first love.

As published on Evergreen Park Patch:

New York Times Best Selling Author Steve Berry speaks candidly about perseverance and his long awaited road to success at the Evergreen Park Public Library Thursday night.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again; famous words that accurately describe American novelist, Steve Berry and his award-winning writing career. This New York Times Best Selling Author has proven that with each failed attempt in life, one must not give up, but rather hang in there for the long haul.

Berry spoke Thursday night to a crowd of more than 70 guests at the Evergreen Park Public Library about the latest addition to his literary collection entitled The Jefferson Key, and his long, bumpy road to success. The Jefferson Key is Berry's most recent installment to a thrilling seven-part series staring fictional character Cotton Malone, detailing his investigations of the presidential assassinations during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, and their seemingly unrelated histories.

This critically acclaimed and witty author spoke candidly about many things, including his 10 books published in 51 countries and 40 different languages, but perhaps placed the greatest emphasis on the importance of preserving history, the earlier stages of his career and the many failed attempts he endured as a writer.

One might think that with more than 12 million copies sold and in circulation world wide, Berry would not know what failure means let alone experience it, but he has demonstrated with more than 80 failed attempts over the span of 12 years of trying to get his five novels published, that if you want something badly enough you have to work hard in order to have it.

Berry began his writing career with his first manuscript in 1990, while he was a practicing attorney. He said that he had always had a passion for writing, and always considered writing a book, but never took the time to do so. Eventually he sat down and completed his first work, then later on, completed four more. But with each manuscript he still was rejected.

Berry credits his success to a writing group that he joined and attended for six years. According to Berry, the group forced him to think critically and analyze his works and fine tune them as they progressed. Berry also said that the group allowed him to realize his own voice, and “to hang in there, and try it again.”

“In our writing groups we would read one chapter aloud to [one another in] the group and we were only allowed to have open ears and a shut mouth.”

“Seventy-five percent of what was said in those group meetings was garbage,” because according to him it often times would be a critique of an author’s work, but “the other 25 percent [was] golden.”

“You have to know what’s good [and what's not], and how to separate the two,” said Berry. Berry said that in the first two years with the group, he did not know how to differentiate between the two, but in time was able to fine tune his craft with the help of his group members and their constructive feedback.

“There is nobody in the world that can teach you what to write, but there are ways in which to learn how to write,” Berry said. Like all things, writing is a process, he said, something that takes time, effort and energy.

Berry eventually published his first novel, The Templar’s Legacy, and the rest is history. Nine books and three online e-books later, he has proven his career to be a success.

Berry said his words of wisdom to young and upcoming writers are, “you have to write.”

“You have to know your genre, and read what’s in it,” said Berry. He also suggested writers find a writers group to gain critical analysis and insight into each body of work. Writing groups aid in the betterment of the overall published product, he said, because they can “help tighten your story line; make it cleaner, smother, and give you structure.”

Berry said writing groups "can also help [the author] shape [their] point of view.”

Additionally, Berry encouraged young writers not compare their works to other notable authors, but rather find their own distinct voice. “The only fair comparison is to compare yourself to yourself, [meaning] compare your earlier works to your most recent ones.” That, according to Berry, is the only way to measure growth and success.

“As a writer, all you can hope for is that what you’ve [written] today was better than yesterday, and what you’ve wrote yesterday was better than the day before,” he said.

Nicki Seidl, director of the Evergreen Park Public Library is currently reading The Jefferson Key, and said she noticed that Berry’s novels “have several different means to grab the audience. He’s got a lot of different ways to reach out.”

Seidl continued to say that because of his immense popularity, “people come from all over for these types of events” just to get an opportunity to gain a glimpse of him.

Mary Deering, social events coordinator for the library, spoke about the author’s finesse as a narrator. Deering said that Berry is a great storyteller, and has a tremendous imagination. The way that each character and their situation are vividly brought to life makes his works so notable.

Book club member and Evergreen Park native Nancy Duffy said, “his books are entertaining, fast moving and very compelling,” and for her and the 11 other members of her book club, he’s not a regular read but could most definitely become one.

Now in what seems like the pinnacle of his career, Berry is still hard at work. He and his wife Elizabeth have started a non-profit organization called History Matters, dedicated to the restoration and the preservation of history and historical artifacts around the nation. All of the proceeds generated goes toward supporting young authors pursuing their writing endeavors.
