A LETTER FROM SENATOR JIM DeMINT

Dear Friends:

The Los Angeles Times recently published a story about a man in Utah who has dedicated much of his free time and disposable income toward helping elect a new type of Republican to the United States Senate.

The article included this line, which caught my attention. It describes the movement taking place right now, which is motivating him and millions of other Americans to take action to save their country.

It is an awakening, he suggests, of conservatives who say that government must be rooted more firmly in the Constitution and that lawmakers need to focus less on power, perks and pork-barrel spending.

It is an awakening -- a realization that the Constitution was written to restrain the federal government so it cannot take away our freedoms.

The man in the story is working day and night to help elect Mike Lee, a candidate for U.S. Senate in Utah. I hope you will help Mike too.

Over 3,000 delegates gathered at the Utah State Nominating Convention to select two candidates to be on ballot for the June 22nd Republican primary. The convention made national news because the delegates eliminated the incumbent Senator, thereby ending his 18-year career.

One of the two candidates who emerged was Mike Lee -- an expert in constitutional law and the most reliable conservative in the race.

Mike Lee is the son of Rex Lee, who was one of the most prominent defenders of the Constitution in the past thirty years. Rex Lee served as Solicitor General under President Ronald Reagan and was the President of Brigham Young University. But most importantly, he was a father to a son whom he taught to love the Constitution.

After law school, Mike practiced appellate law, served as a prosecutor for the U.S. Attorney's Office, and clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. Mike also started a project called the Article I Society, where he gave lectures on the Constitution and the limits it places on the authority of Congress.

Mike Lee is running for the U.S. Senate today because Washington has ignored the Constitution that was created to protect Americans from a government that spends too much, taxes too much, and regulates too much. Mike and his wife Sharon have three young children, and they want their kids to inherit a country as free and as strong as the one they grew up in.

Since he started his campaign, Mike has been the conservative standout.

Mike was the first candidate in this race to support the Enumerated Powers Act, which forces Congress to justify -- under Article I -- the constitutional authority for any legislation it adopts.
Mike was the first candidate in this race to point out that the individual mandate in the President's health care takeover was unconstitutional. He was the first to sign the pledge to repeal it.

Mike was the first candidate in this race to stand up to the reckless spending in Washington by pledging to ban earmarks and to support a Balanced Budget Amendment.

Mike was the first candidate in this race to stand up to the idea of career politicians by pledging to support a term limits for members of the House and the Senate.

Mike is focused on limiting our government in a way that I have not seen from many candidates. He knows that the government should not be subsidizing, bailing out, and taking over private companies. He would have opposed the Wall Street bailout and I need his help to end bailouts forever.

At the beginning of every lawmaker's term in office, he or she goes through a swearing-in ceremony. Most see it as just a formality or a special occasion to commemorate the event by having their picture taken with the Speaker of the House or the Vice President.

But the oath is a pledge to "support and defend" the Constitution, and we desperately need new leaders like Mike Lee who take it seriously. For Mike, the Constitution is not an abstract idea or a campaign slogan. He knows it's the road map for changing the course of our country.

If Mike is elected to the Senate, he will add his voice to the growing number of new Republicans who understand that supporting and defending the Constitution will restore the greatness of America.

Please join me in supporting Mike Lee's Senate campaign today. Make a contribution so he can get his conservative message out before the June 22nd Republican primary.

Mike's opponent is self-funding his campaign rather than relying on grass roots support from donors like you. Let's make sure Mike has the resources he needs to win this race. If we all work together, we can do it.

It's not good enough to just be a Republican anymore. We need true leaders who are going to stand up for the Constitution when it's popular and when it's not. We need constitutional conservatives like Mike Lee.

Thank you for your support. The next few months are extremely critical to our nation's future. Please continue to do whatever you can to support the conservative comeback.

Sincerely,

Jim DeMint
United States Senator

National Review: Mike Lee for the Right

by RAMESH PONNURU
MAY 18, 2010 4:00 A.M.

This principled constitutionalist from Utah would be a welcome voice in the Senate.

When Sen. Robert Bennett came in third at the Utah Republican Party’s convention, commentators marveled at the irrationality of conservatives who rejected an incumbent who scored so high on conservative voting scorecards. Mike Lee, one of the candidates who beat Bennett, demonstrated the limitations of those scorecards when he dropped by NR’s offices a few days ago.

Utah is one of the most conservative states in the country, and in Lee it would have perhaps the most conservative senator.

Lee wants to repeal Obamacare, and is willing to risk a government shutdown to defund it. When Republicans blinked during the shutdown of 1995–96, he says, it was “the beginning of the end” of the Republican revolution.

“I am deeply disturbed” by the Kagan nomination, he adds. Her position on military recruiting at Harvard “in a time of war . . . is reason enough for me to have a strong inclination to vote her down.” Congress has a legitimate power under Article III, Section 2 of the Constitution to remove issues from the federal courts’ jurisdiction and “has prudently exercised that power . . . more often than people think.”

The candidate is nervous about personal accounts as part of Social Security. He would prefer to wind the program down entirely — preserving it for current retirees while telling young people that they will not be getting any benefits. I have literally never heard any major-party candidate for statewide office say anything like this.

Fabulous article about Mike Lee published in the National Review! You're going to love reading the rest of it.

Awaken With Hope

Life is such a funny little thing. As long as we awaken each day with a hope for the future and our eyes wide open to all the possibilities available to us we are in for a surprise.

Never could I have imagined 15 years ago that today I would be a published author, a publisher and a political mover and shaker.

I look back over my life and see chances I've missed and those I have embraced. All these things are the sum whole of what I have become; a woman determined to fight for what she believes and pursue her dreams with a fierceness that overcomes all obstacles.

This attitude is a heritage from my parents and those people over the generations from whom I am descended.

Give up? Never.

Stagnate? God forbid.

Succumb to the pressure? Hell no.

I will awaken each day, as did Joseph Smith, Jr., and fight that battle with a fierceness incapable of being extinguished.

U.S. Senate Candidate Mike Lee Opposes Kagan

Citing Kagan’s views and actions, Lee expresses significant concerns regarding Obama appointee.

Alpine, Utah, May 13, 2010 U.S. Senate Candidate Mike Lee has come out as an early opponent of President Obama’s decision to nominate his Solicitor General, Elena Kagan, to fill the Supreme Court seat of retiring Justice John Paul Stevens. Kagan has drawn fire early in the nomination process based on the fact that, while serving as dean of Harvard Law School, she prohibited military recruiters from conducting on-campus interviews at Harvard. She has also been criticized based on her lack of judicial experience, limited litigation experience, surprisingly short paper trail (despite having spent most of her career in academia, she has published only six law review articles), and apparent lack of respect for the First Amendment (as Solicitor General, she signed her name to a brief in United States v. Stevens [2010] making the disturbing argument that “[w]hether a given category of speech enjoys First Amendment protection depends upon a categorical balancing of the value of the speech against its societal costs”).

Mike Lee stated: “Kagan’s decision to exclude military recruiters from the Harvard campus — especially at a time when our military is fighting overseas — gives me great pause in considering her for a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land. Her lack of judicial experience,” Lee continued, “makes it difficult to ascertain how faithful she might be in independently and impartially deciding cases that will come before her. And although many have served on the Supreme Court without prior judicial service, Kagan’s professional track record falls short of establishing that she would consistently respect the text and original understanding of the Constitution.”

Lee added: “The Senate cannot simply be a rubber stamp for President Obama’s nominees; otherwise, those nominees will become a rubber stamp for whatever course of action the Obama administration decides to pursue.”

True conservatives across the country are beginning to mount their opposition to Kagan’s nomination. While recognizing that, if elected, he will not be in office until after Kagan’s confirmation proceedings have concluded, Lee noted that “having clerked and litigated at all three levels of the federal judiciary, I have become quite effective at sniffing out activist judges. I would love to lend my experience and insight to the Senate.”

Mike Lee continues to campaign around the State of Utah, driving toward the June 22nd primary, when the Republican nominee will be chosen.

About Mike Lee: An attorney from Alpine, Utah, Mike has spent his career helping individuals and organizations get overreaching government regulations and control out of their lives and businesses. A lifetime student of the Constitution, he graduated from the Brigham Young University Law School. Mike served as a law clerk to Judge Dee Benson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah and later spent time as General Counsel to Governor Jon Huntsman. Mike has twice served as a law clerk to current Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. He first clerked for the solidly conservative jurist at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, then was asked to return as a clerk during Justice Alito’s important first year on the bench of the U.S. Supreme Court. Mike has also held positions in private practice, and is currently a partner with the Washington, D.C.-based law firm of Howrey LLP. His understanding of the Constitution and law have made him a valuable resource for individuals and organizations throughout the country.

Mike Lee: A Moment of Truth on Immigration

The Constitution makes clear that the federal government is responsible for making and enforcing laws governing immigration. The federal government has dropped the ball in this regard, allowing -- and in some instances even encouraging -- tens of millions of people to enter our borders illegally. Congress needs to fix this problem by:
  • Mandating and enforcing the denial of federal and state welfare benefits to illegal immigrants;
  • Investing in the technology, personnel, and physical infrastructure necessary to secure the southern border;
  • Enforcing existing immigration laws;
  • Improving and promoting the use of E-Verify--a nationwide immigration--status verification system designed to enable employers to ascertain quickly and accurately whether would-be employees are authorized to work in the United States;
  • Clarifying the original intent of the Citizenship Clause through legislation specifying that children born to illegal-alien parents in the United States are not entitled to automatic citizenship; and
  • Making clear that illegal aliens will not receive amnesty in any form, and must return to their own countries before applying for a U.S. visa.

Mike Lee: A Moment of Truth on the Military

Mike Lee's Stance on Military Operations:

"Our troops should only be placed in harm's way to eliminate military targets -- i.e., situations that present a clear and present threat to our national security. The brave men and women who protect our freedoms should be brought home as soon all such targets have been destroyed or neutralized and after local forces have been trained sufficiently to protect their own land from further incursion.

"When it comes to Afghanistan and the military, I stand with a group of individuals like Glenn Beck and Congressman Jason Chaffetz who share similar positions, support our military, and are asking the hard questions on strategy. We must ensure that our service men and women have everything they need to succeed -- from equipment and technology to a clear mission, with mandated rules of engagement which will position them to win so they can return home as swiftly as possible." ~ Mike Lee

And from military veterans themselves:

"There have been many out-of-context references to statements made by Mike Lee regarding Afghanistan. As a group of former military servicemen, we would like to take a moment and set the record straight. Quite frankly, Mike is right.

"As history in Vietnam bears out, when reasons for a war are allowed to deteriorate through the mechanism of politicians and media bias, no matter how long we stay in a country, we will not come out victorious. We cannot deviate from the job of quickly neutralizing any threat to our national security. By executing a focused set of military objectives, we will send a potent message of strength in order to deter repetition of past offenses; we must not fall into the trap of "Nation Building to American specifications." Unless we execute a clear military strategy with proper rules of engagement, we will leave behind countries who hate our interference and perceive us as arrogant."

Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina Endorses Mike Lee

Mike Lee is a man of experience, wisdom and courage. Courage to stand for the America he believes in. Courage to proudly declare the U.S. Constitution divinely inspired and defend it with every action. Courage to face the odds and walk forward boldly, unafraid to take on the most powerful judges in the land. Clerk to conservative U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, Mike learned the law both at the hands of his father and also as a clerk for Alito. Having spent his adult life in defense of the Constitution, Mike is uniquely qualified to go to Washington, D.C. and craft legislation which will be constitutionally sound. Legislation he writes or helps craft will withstand any U.S. Supreme Court challenge. In addition, he will fight to repeal every bit of legislation which violates the U.S. Constitution. He has said it won't be easy and it won't be fast, but that doesn't mean he won't try. He will work to slash the budget, close our borders, repeal Obamacare (and anything else they shove through with their dying political gasps) and restore constitutional government to America.

To Mike Lee the U.S. Constitution is more than a talking point. To Mike Lee America is more than a footnote in the annals of history. To Mike Lee the future is bright because he has answered the call of the American people: Where is that man or woman who will go to Washington, D.C. and fight for us? That man is Mike Lee.

Please join me in the fight to send Mike Lee to the U.S. Senate. It is time to send a constitutional conservative to Washington, D.C. If you'd like to do your part in stopping Barack Obama and the 111th Congress, join me in helping Mike Lee win in the June 22nd Primary in Utah.

Senator Bob Bennett Out: Challengers Go to Primary

As one of those 3,452 delegates who voted Senator Bob Bennett out today, let me be clear. I agreed with less than 50% of Senator Bennett's votes. It is not a tea party anger that drove me. It is the demand that those men and women representing me in Washington, D.C. and locally, hold to the same conservative values I hold.

Bob Bennett said on our local news 2 or 3 months ago "People should be careful about holding public officials to their oath of office because the Constitution has many, many interpretations." My jaw hit the ground because I simply couldn't believe the words came out of his mouth. But they did, because I rewound my DVR and listened to him say it again.

When constituents called his office they were treated with contempt and our voices were no longer heard.

The longer Bennett served, the more liberal he became. In Utah, we hold our candidates to a high standard, and many more people, more than ever, are paying attention now. Because of this, Senator Orrin Hatch, as nice a man as he is, will face a similar challenge when his turn comes.

In Utah we are highly informed voters. We know what we want and that is a constitutional government restored to Washington, D.C. Those who cannot get behind this goal of the people of Utah will no longer represent us in Washington, D.C.

On June 22nd, my candidate of choice, Mike Lee faces off with progressive Republican Tim Bridgewater. It is a choice of conservative vs. progressive here in Utah. It is my belief, Utah will choose the conservative candidate and that is Mike Lee.

A Man of Principles, Integrity and Honor: Mike Lee

Mike Lee is a man of principles, integrity, honor and courage. He is not afraid to stand up against power and call it what it is. He is not afraid to take on anyone. He has proven this time and time again. He does not waver. He does not compromise his values. He does not lie. He does not distort.

He loves and knows the U.S. Constitution inside and out. His message has been clear, concise and constant. He has spent his entire adult career defending the U.S. Constitution and the constitutional rights of Americans. He is devoted to his wife and children. God, family and country are everything to him.

Popular or not, he has always stood for what is right. And THIS is the man other candidates have attacked at every turn. THIS is the man Bob Lonsberry doesn't like. And THIS is the man who gave me hope that America's future could be bright as we work to restore constitutional government to America. This is not a talking point for Mike, it is what he has done with every case he has taken.

He's not afraid to take on the job just because it's hard. And has real world solutions for the problems we face in America today.

Why is this a problem for anyone? Seriously? I really want to know.

It is my hope and prayer that Utah state delegates choose wisely this Saturday. It is my hope they eschew the attack ads, literature and vitriol of people supporting other candidates. It is my hope that at the conclusion of the state convention on Saturday we have a candidate who did not stoop to dirty politics and stayed above the fray. That candidate who has stayed on topic, stayed on target, who has not compromised his values ... and that is Mike Lee.

I have no hesitation in trusting Mike Lee to do what he has promised to do. He signed the Contract from America. He has asked to be held to three vital priorities:
Repeal and Defund Obamacare – My first priority will be to begin to reverse course on the government takeover of our health care system. I commit to you that I will use my lifetime of experience to apply both the Constitution and the law to repeal this ill-advised and ill-gotten bill. This includes legal action on one hand and strategies to defund its implementation on the other. I will work tirelessly to help defeat Obamacare and replace it with real reform which protects individual and states' rights while providing free-market solutions to reduce costs, drive competition, and ensure Americans have the best and most affordable health care solutions in the world.

Balanced Budget Amendment – We can no longer afford to have the federal government spending us into oblivion. It must stop. I commit to drive a balanced budget amendment through the Senate with the requisite two-thirds vote majority it requires. We can, we must, and we will get the government to function like the majority of states in the country and like you and I and countless Americans do in our businesses and families – with a balanced budget.

Lasting Entitlement Reform – Unfunded entitlements continue to drain our economy and weaken our nation. From Social Security to Medicare and Medicaid and other programs, we simply cannot continue to push off until tomorrow the difficult decisions of today. These reforms will take time to implement so as to protect those currently in the system who must be held harmless. We must, however, begin today to do what needs to be done to transform the many and massive federal government entitlement programs and push them to where they constitutionally belong – the states. I will lead that charge beginning on my first day in office.
And I intend to subject Mike Lee to the same scrutiny I apply to Congress now. It is the responsibility of every American citizen to watch our elected officials carefully and to let them know when we don't agree. It is the responsibility of every American citizen to elect good, wise men and women into office. Wisdom does not equate with age, sadly. It comes from living life and learning from it. Mike Lee has done this. He is 38-years old and anxious to restore the constitutional debate in Congress bringing us back to a Madisonian approach, rather than the Hamiltonian approach we have taken.

I ask you, if you are a state delegate in Utah, to exercise your ballot wisely and cast your vote for Mike Lee on Saturday.

Stephanie Nielson, You are an Inspiration

Many of you remember when I blogged about the the NieNie Dialogues and Stephanie Nielson who was so in love with life, her husband and her children. Stephanie and her husband, whom she calls Mr. Nielson (I sense a Jane Austen influence there), were in a near fatal plane accident. She was in a coma for months but slowly came out of it. Here is her story:

How very inspired I am by Stephanie. Truly moved, inspired and uplifted by her outlook on life. Her message is one which should be shared with every woman in the world.

Remember November

These are two very powerful video, paid for by the Republican Governors Association, intended to spread the message across America, to Remember November ... they chose to create ads which would remind Americans to get to the polls in November and the liberal left lost their collective minds.

and --

It is critical that American citizens research their candidates. Find the ones who have a true north. Find the ones who know, love and understand the U.S. Constitution. Find the ones who after making that oath to defend the U.S. Constitution will hold to that oath and then temper their actions with wisdom, common sense and a conviction to push forward, no matter how difficult the path may become. Find the ones who understand the steps to limited government as espoused by U.S. Senate candidate Mike Lee:

1) End deficit spending - this is a must if America is to survive.

2) Strengthen our national security - we must stop nation building. Send our military in to do their job and then bring them home. Ten years in Afghanistan with no clear victory is insane. Let our men and women do their jobs without political interference. Yeah Obama, I'm talking to you.

3) Reform the tax system - our tax system is insane. As Mike Lee says, the Constitution is only 16 pages long, the tax code should be the same.

4) Reduce government regulations - government regulation is choking the life out of our economy.

5) We must end the era of lifetime politicians - if being lifetime politicians means they lose their true norths after a few terms, and it does mean that, then it is time to do something about it.

These are the basics of what must be done when a constitutional government is restored to America.

Here in Utah, I have chosen to publicly endorse, which means I support him, Mike Lee for U.S. Senate. He is a man of honor, integrity, immense intelligence as well as a commodity which is in short supply in Washington, D.C. these days ... common sense. He is joining the likes of Jim DeMint, Marco Rubio, and other conservative candidates and Senators who are determined to restore America's government to a constitutional government. I support them wholly and completely in this goal. I ask you to do the same. Find your own Mike Lee's and let us send an army of junior senators and congressmen to Washington, D.C.

Let us Remember November, mark our calendars now, for November 2nd and let nothing stop us from going to the polls and casting a vote for fiscal responsibility, reigning in the federal government, and the restoration of the Republic. In other words, vote for the Republic of the United States of America.

Mike Lee Leaves Campaign Trail to Defend Kane County's R.S. 2477 Rights

4 May 2010 - Arguing before the 10th Circuit Court in Denver, Lee fights environmental groups on behalf of Kane County

Denver, Colorado, May 4, 2010 — With only four days before the Utah State Republican Convention, U.S. Senate candidate Mike Lee took a 48-hour leave of absence from the campaign trail to argue on behalf of Kane County’s R.S. 2477 rights. The case, Wilderness Society v. Kane County is a federal lands dispute brought on by two environmental groups.

The dispute began after Kane County passed an ordinance allowing off-highway vehicle use across certain established R.S. 2477 right-of-way roads in the Grand Staircase-Escalante. Two environmental groups—the Wilderness Society and Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (“SUWA”)—brought suit against Kane County alleging that BLM management policies trumped Kane County’s ordinance. In August 2009, the Tenth Circuit granted standing to the Wilderness Society and SUWA, ignored Kane County’s R.S. 2477 rights-of-way, and held that the Kane County ordinance was pre-empted by federal law. This case is on appeal for rehearing before the entire Tenth Circuit Court with Mike Lee arguing the case for Kane County.

Campaign Manager Ryan McCoy commented: “Mike has been front and center in this fight, working with the state legislature in battling the encroachment of the federal government and extreme environmental groups on Utah land. From a campaign standpoint, every minute is important at this stage of the race, but Mike felt it was critical for him to see this case through and fight for the rights of Kane County and the citizens of Utah."

Deputy Campaign Manager Dan Hauser added: "Many people don't realize that this is the kind of law Mike practices. Candidates often talk about getting the over-reaching federal government out of our lives, lands, and businesses, but Mike Lee does it every day. State's rights and land issues aren't just campaign talking points for Mike, he has been out there leading the way by testifying before the Utah state legislature on several state-sovereignty bills and fighting in the courtroom to defend the constitutional rights of his clients."

Mike will return to the campaign trail Wednesday morning with a full slate of events, interviews, and meetings. For details go to mikelee2010.com/events.

About Mike Lee: An attorney from Alpine, Utah, Mike has spent his career helping individuals and organizations get overreaching government regulations and control out of their lives and businesses. Kudos to Arizona, You are standing up to your rights!

To all the morons who haven't read the Arizona bill I only have one thing to say: read the damn bill. It's only 16 pages. Oh wait, you can't read or speak English ... then go back home. Let me explain one more time: the cops can't address your illegal status unless you have been pulled over or arrested for some other clear violation of the law. There is no racism. There is no racial profiling. And Al Sharpton, shut your mouth until you can say something intelligent, oh heck, I'll settle for true. Juan Williams, ditto to you as well.

1) This law makes it a state crime as well as a federal crime to be an illegal immigrant. Now something can be done at the state level because the feds are refusing to do anything at all.

2) Illegal immigration is running rampant in the U.S. Point in fact, because 1 in 3 illegal crossings happen at the Arizona border the Mexican drug cartels have moved their war with their own government across the border and declared war on the citizens of Arizona, AMERICAN CITIZENS! Phoenix has become the #2 kidnap capital of the world, OF THE WORLD, due to illegal immigration. American citizens are dying and the federal government continues to do nothing. So the state of Arizona stepped up and did what the federal government wouldn't.

3) 72% of illegal immigrants commit identity theft upon crossing the border. Let's take the lowest number offered us in the U.S., there are 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. (the number I believe is closer to 20 million). 72% of 12 million is 8,640,000. 8,640,000 Americans are victims of identity theft directly tied to illegal immigration. This is not a victimless crime no matter what people say.

The federal government refuses to close our southern border, round up the illegal immigrants and send them home, send the illegal immigrants who are violent criminals back to their countries of origin to serve their time there, and stop all entitlement programs benefiting illegal immigrants. Then we can start getting the healthcare, criminal justice and welfare programs back to a healthier status and get a little financial stability here in America. Illegal immigration is a cancer on America, it must be completely excised. This is why Arizona took action, as are other states. We simply cannot afford to continue being the world's whipping boy.

Now, to the other American states who are calling Arizona a police state. Here's an idea, I agree with Bernie Goldberg and espoused the same sentiment on Facebook last week, ship all the illegal immigrants out of the states who do not want them and ship 'em to all the states who are screaming at the top of their lungs that anyone supporting this legislation is a racist. Let them pay for all the free health care. Let them pay for educating children who don't speak a word of English. Let me flood the job market and put more Americans out of work. Let their criminal justice system and foster care system be inundated with the children of illegal immigrants. Let their entitlement systems be strained to breaking point by illegal immigrants coming here to live the "good life." The western states which have been carrying the bulk of the illegal immigrant load can get a break for a change. Yeah, I like that idea. That way, states can be designated as "sanctuary states" and the rest of can get back to getting on an even keel.

God vs. Science: Not Albert Einstein but Worthy Nonetheless

I received this email from a friend, Kenneth, and am grateful he did so. I've seen this email before and have seen it attributed to Albert Einstein, which is not true. In all seriousness, it doesn't matter if this conversation even took place? It is an argument with a solid and complete premise. So read this and consider it as a parable which teaches a very valuable lesson.

Read on and tell me if you don't agree:

In a College classroom with a professor teaching a philosophy lesson --

"Let me explain the problem science has with religion." The atheist professor of philosophy pauses before his class and then asks one of his new students to stand.

"You're a Christian, aren't you, son?"

"Yes sir," the student replies.

"So you believe in God?"

"Absolutely. "

"Is God good?"

"Sure! God's good."

"Is God all-powerful? Can God do anything?"

"Yes."

"Are you good or evil?"

"The Bible says I'm evil."

The professor grins knowingly. "Aha! The Bible!" He considers for a moment. "Here's one for you. Let's say there's a sick person over here and you can cure him. You can do it. Would you help him? Would you try?"

:Yes sir, I would."

"So you're good."

"I wouldn't say that."

"But why not say that? You'd help a sick and maimed person if you could. Most of us would if we could. But God doesn't."

The student does not answer, so the professor continues.

"He doesn't, does he? My brother was a Christian who died of cancer, even though he prayed to Jesus to heal him. How is this Jesus good? Can you answer that one?"

The student remains silent.

"No, you can't, can you?" the professor says. He takes a sip of water from a glass on his desk to give the student time to relax. "Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?"

"Er..yes," the student says.

"Is Satan good?"

The student doesn't hesitate on this one. "No."

"Then where does Satan come from?"

The student falters. "From God"

"That's right. God made Satan, didn't he? Tell me, son. Is there evil in this world?"

"Yes, sir."

"Evil's everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything, correct?"

"Yes"

"So who created evil?" The professor continued, "If God created everything, then God created evil, since evil exists, and according to the principle that our works define who we are, then God is evil."

Again, the student has no answer.

"Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things, do they exist in this world?"

The student squirms on his feet.

"Yes."

"So who created them?"

The student does not answer again, so the professor repeats his question.

"Who created them?"

There is still no answer. Suddenly the lecturer breaks away to pace in front of the classroom. The class is mesmerized.

"Tell me," he continues onto another student. "Do you believe in Jesus Christ, son?"

The student's voice betrays him and cracks.

"Yes, professor, I do."

The old man stops pacing. "Science says you have five senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Have you ever seen Jesus?"

"No sir. I've never seen Him."

"Then tell us if you've ever heard your Jesus?"

"No, sir, I have not."

"Have you ever felt your Jesus, tasted your Jesus or smelt your Jesus? Have you ever had any sensory perception of Jesus Christ, or God for that matter?"

"No, sir, I'm afraid I haven't."

"Yet you still believe in him?"

"Yes."

"According to the rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your God doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?"

"Nothing," the student replies. "I only have my faith."

"Yes, faith," the professor repeats. "And that is the problem science has with God. There is no evidence, only faith."

The student stands quietly for a moment, before asking a question of His own.

"Professor, is there such thing as heat?"

"Yes."

"And is there such a thing as cold?"

"Yes, son, there's cold too."

"No sir, there isn't."

The professor turns to face the student, obviously interested. The room suddenly becomes very quiet.

The student begins to explain.

"You can have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega-heat, unlimited heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat, but we don't have anything called 'cold'. We can hit down to 458 degrees below zero, which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold; otherwise we would be able to go colder than the lowest -458 degrees. Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-458 F) is the total absence of heat.

"You see, sir, cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat we can measure in thermal units because heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it."

Silence across the room. A pen drops somewhere in the classroom, sounding like a hammer.

"What about darkness, professor. Is there such a thing as darkness?"

"Yes," the professor replies without hesitation. "What is night if it isn't darkness?"

"You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is not something; it is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light, but if you have no light constantly you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? That's the meaning we use to define the word. In reality, darkness isn't. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?"

The professor begins to smile at the student in front of him. This will be a good semester.

"So what point are you making, young man?"

"Yes, professor. My point is, your philosophical premise is flawed to start with, and so your conclusion must also be flawed."

The professor's face cannot hide his surprise this time. "Flawed? Can you explain how?"

"You are working on the premise of duality,' the student explains."

"You argue that there is life and then there's death; a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought."

"It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life, just the absence of it.

"Now tell me, professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?"

"If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, young man, yes, of course I do."

"Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?"

The professor begins to shake his head, still smiling, as he realizes where the argument is going. A very good semester, indeed.

"Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you now not a scientist, but a preacher?"

The class is in uproar. The student remains silent until the commotion has subsided.

"To continue the point you were making earlier to the other student, let me give you an example of what I mean." The student looks around the room. "Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the professor's brain?"

The class breaks out into laughter.

"Is there anyone here who has ever heard the professor's brain, felt the professor's brain, touched or smelt the professor's brain? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, with all due respect, sir.

"So if science says you have no brain, how can we trust your lectures, sir?"

Now the room is silent. The professor just stares at the student, his face unreadable. Finally, after what seems an eternity, the old man answers. "I Guess you'll have to take them on faith."

"Now, you accept that there is faith, and, in fact, faith exists with life," the student continues. "Now, sir, is there such a thing as evil?"

Now uncertain, the professor responds, "Of course, there is. We see it everyday. It is in the daily example of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil."

To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light."

The professor sat down.

Let me offer this. God lives. Jesus Christ condescended to come to earth and be born in the most humble of circumstances to a royal lineage, descended directly from King David through His mother, Mary. His whole purpose to coming to earth was to "...bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man." (Moses 1:39 - Pearl of Great Price)

I testify with all my heart and soul that Jesus is the Christ. He is that one prophesied of for millennia and He was born into the world over 2,000 years ago fulfilling that prophecy. He is our King, our Lord, our Savior and our Redeemer. He did walk the dusty paths of the Middle East teaching the purity of the Gospel once again. Without prevarication I testify that He did suffer for all our sins, sorrows, illnesses and grief, meeting the demands of eternal law and justice. He paid the price for us and asks only that we offer a broken heart and a contrite spirit in return.

I assure you He was raised up on the cross and died 1,977 years ago, just before the Jewish Sabbath began. His broken and torn body was taken down and lovingly carried to the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, from whom I am descended, and Jesus arose from the grave three days later, breaking the bands of death. I promise you that the Resurrection is real and guaranteed to every human being who has lived on, is living on or ever will live on this world of God’s creation. Believe, my friends, for it is truth I offer you.

Jesus Christ asks us to remember who we are. He wants us to remember the divine heritage from which we come. He wants us to remember Him. He wants us to remember our Heavenly Father. In all things, Jesus Christ stands for us, just as He told that prophet of old, Moses, and I repeat it again: For behold, this is My work and glory -- to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.

He asks so little of us. Can we not give Him our loyalty and love in return.
