Random Thoughts About Life

I just returned from seeing Mama Mia for the fourth time! I LOVE THAT MOVIE! I walk out of there with a spring in my step, a smile on my face and very, very happy! Great movie. Now, who else can I con into going with me? So far, my sister and my friends went with me on opening night. Alvin took me on my birthday. Sete, bless his heart, came with me on Wednesday. And today, one of my "missionary sons" and his fiance' went with me! Gotta love it!

Barack Obama is about to explode my brain. I had a conversation with a lovely little lady today who told me was supporting Barack Obama. Thank goodness she can't vote! When I asked her why she was supporting him she said she couldn't say why but that he seemed like a very nice guy. Holy Cow! People! Over a trillion in new taxes to pay for his universal health care, our increased dependence on foreign oil, our reduction in military and greater supplementation to environmentalists because Obama isn't bright enough to recognize the scam, governmentalized education and parenting . . . I could go on and on, and have. But can't people see what they are doing? They are voting for the complete and utter destruction of America under the presidency of a man who hates America and feels the need to apologize to the world for America.

For what?
  • For saving their butts in World War I?
  • For saving their butts in World War II?
  • For stopping the march of communism into South Korea?
  • For feeding and caring for the world?
  • For being there EVERY TIME a natural disaster hits, providing food, supplies and people?
  • For loaning everything to 3rd world countries and not demanding those funds back?
  • For fighting for the right to keep men's minds' free?
  • For the best health care system in the world?
  • For the greatest entrepreneurial society in the world?
What, Obama? What exactly are you apologizing for? You bastard! Don't you dare apologize to the world on our behalf. You have no right, nor do you have the authority. Traveling the world as if you were already the president of the United States. Don't let the accolades of societies who have sold their freedoms long ago go to your head. I, along with others like me, will fight you tooth and nail to keep America from turning into another freakin' Europe!

Moving on before I have an aneurysm. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the grass is green, and for the rest of today I'm going to ignore the national issues we are facing and just enjoy being free and an American. Don't know how long that state of being will continue, but I'm going to enjoy it for all its worth.

Along with a partner, we are looking to buy an established publishing house. Anybody have $3,000,000 you want to throw our way?

We are on our way to join Alvin's family for a Salima Family Reunion. So everybody have a great day and I'll check in tomorrow with a review on Surprise Packages by Nancy Anderson, Lael Littke and Carroll Hoffling Morris. Yes, that's what I'll be reading today when things get boring.

Obama's Trip Backfires; McCain Surges to 4-Point Lead in USA Today/Gallup Poll

A surprising poll released Monday confirms Sen. Barack Obama's worst nightmare: he actually lost ground to Sen. John McCain after a global trip meant to buck up his sagging credentials in foreign and military policy.

The USA Today/Gallup poll has McCain leading Obama by four points, 49 percent to Obama's 45 percent, among likely voters.

Just last month, the same poll had McCain trailing by six points to the neophyte U.S. senator.

Among registered voters, McCain was just three points behind Obama -- a statistical dead heat.

The USA Today/Gallup poll is consistent with the Rasmussen tracking poll, which also shows Obama ahead by just three percentage points -- again a statistical tie.

The polls suggest that Obama's efforts to act like a president abroad -- even though he has yet to be elected -- may have backfired among American voters.

In Berlin, Obama spoke to 200,000 cheering Germans. The Democratic candidate used the foreign platform to express the view that he was a "fellow citizen of the world" and apologized for America's imperfections.

Later, he decided not to visit wounded American soldiers at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in southern Germany. When the Pentagon informed Obama's campaign that the hospital would be closed to the press and campaign staff -- only the senator and his official staff would be allowed in -- Obama decided to cancel the event.

McCain has been quick to seize on Obama's ill-advised decision to cancel the humanitarian visit to the hospital.

A McCain television commercial released on the Internet this past weekend chided Obama for his callous act.

"And now, he made time to go to the gym, but canceled a visit with wounded troops,” the ad says. “Seems the Pentagon wouldn’t allow him to bring cameras. John McCain is always there for our troops.”

So, while Barack was in Germany he apologized to the roaring crowds for America's imperfections.

While he was in France he spoke of a global community. Which is all fine and dandy, but he doesn't like America and does not enjoy or appreciate her uniqueness is an insane world.

Obama has no right to ask for forgiveness on America's behalf. Why, people, are you voting for this man? For all he has written and all he has said, he hates America. He has no desire to defend our Constitution. He has no idea to further America's cause as a world power and has every intention, and he has carefully laid out his economic plan which will cause such, of reducing America to third world status.

Really? That's what you want? That's the change you striving for? That's the man you want to be the next President of the United States of America. Are you kidding me?

Review of Mama Mia



Last Saturday Alvin let me decide what movie would we would see for my birthday. I chose Mama Mia even though I'd already seen it. It is the true measure of the love my husband has for me that he didn't even groan, just bought the tickets and took me to see it again.

Mery Streep, two-time Academy Award winner and recipient of a record breaking 14 Academy Award nominations, completely blew me away. My favorite production numbers were Honey, Honey, Dancing Queen, and The Winner Takes It All. Although I loved the entire movie, those three were definitely my favorite. I have to tell you, I had no idea Meryl Streep could sing like that. I mean, I always knew she was a killer actress, but WOW!

This little clip is when Meryl, who plays "Donna", finds out that the three men she met, independent of one another, one fateful summer are all in her old goat house. All she has to do is lift that trap door:



And Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, two of my favorite actors, were in the film as well. They did an excellent job too, although Pierce really looks like he's in a lot of pain when he's singing. But he is on key, so . . . it's all good. Stellan Skaarsgard joined them as the third possible father for Donna's daughter.

Although the trailer makes it look like it was all about sex, it wasn't. There were 3 or 4 brief scenes (and I mean "seconds" brief) which I wasn't happy with. But all in all, I loved the movie.

Both times I saw the movie the women in the theater were laughing and enjoying themselves and the men were looking like they wanted to shoot themselves. That added to the enjoyment of the movie for me. The disparity between the two attitudes was so funny. You just know everyone of the men were wishing they were in the theater next door watching The Dark Knight.

Well, there is no doubt my husband loves me.

Recipe: Mama Micki's Chili

One of my favorite dinners when I was little was Mom's homemade chili beans and flapjacks (or frybread as others like to call it.)

I swear, the very best way to eat this chili is up in the mountains, a cool fall evening and the scent of pine trees in the air.

This is the most delicious chili in the world. I kid you not!

So if you live in the city, get a pine scented candle, mix up some killer chili beans and treat your family to a little bit of my childhood memories.

Each of my mother's children has taken this recipe and carried the tradition onward, as my mother did with the recipe from her mother.

Mama Micki's Chili

Soak 4½ pounds of Pinto Beans in water, overnight.

Rinse beans and fill pan with water again.

Put in on the stove on low to medium and let it cook until beans are tender. (This will take two or three hours, depending.) Once the beans are tender, add ingredients and seasonings as follows:

5 lbs. of Browned Hamburger
3 oz. Gebhardt’s Chili Powder (The brand really does make a difference.)
1 t. Sweet Basil
½ t. Cumin
1 T. Oregano
1 to 3 Hunts Tomato Sauce (8 oz. Cans (Again, the brand really does make a difference.))
1 can Peeled Tomatoes
3 Cloves Garlic
1 Medium Onion
Salt to taste.
Pepper to taste.

Simmer for several hours, stirring intermittently. With a couple hours of cooking to go, season to taste. If you want it a little hotter, add more chili powder and pepper. Top each bowl or cup of chili with delicious shredded cheddar cheese. Serve with hot homemade bread, scones or cornbread.

Check back next Monday for a screamin' homemade bread recipe that you can mix up right in your breadmaker. It's a wonderful addition to this chili.

To make flapjacks, take the bread dough I'll be giving you a recipe for next week and pinch off medium size balls of dough. Flatten and pull them into flat round pieces of dough and fry in hot oil, both sides. Then it's great for dipping in the chili beans.

By the way . . . great for breakfast! Scrambled eggs topped with chili and cheese.

You can’t go wrong there.

Chuck Norris on the State of Society

This is a reprint of Chuck Norris' article in Human Events, "What the Bleep?". He couldn't be more right. I was so impressed with his thoughts I decided to reprint them in their entirety.

Jesse Jackson (on an off-air mic before "Fox & Friends") and Whoopi Goldberg (and another host on "The View") have raised the cultural language debate to a new level: Who has the right to say the N-word? Their answer: Blacks can, but whites can't. Unfortunately, this derogatory debate has degraded into Don Imus on steroids.

I agree with a lot that Whoopi had to say about the imbalances between the races. But I disagree with her for going off on an intentional N-word marathon, which was bleeped out repeatedly in order to demonstrate her point. There's a reason her diatribe was bleeped and our society still veils our full expression of the N-word: because it still is regarded by most as derogatory and demeaning. (Even among blacks, the N-word obviously can be defamatory, as Jesse Jackson proved when he used it in the same breath he used to describe how he would like to cut off Barack Obama's genitalia.)

This is more than a race issue and far more than a debate over freedom of speech. When will we learn that just because we can say something doesn't mean that we should? Once again, we're confusing liberty for licentiousness. It is a classic example of what happens when a society leaves its moral absolutes: Everything becomes culturally relative, with each deciding what's right in his own eyes. Language is one more infected arena in America's societal degradation.

Think about it. What word is nasty or unwholesome anymore? There are no "bad words." Words once considered evil are now terms of endearment. There's the B-word, the D-word, the A-word, the F-word, etc. Even bleeps are mere blips on America's moral radar screens. When ministers use G-- d--- in their sermons and moral activists threaten to cut off a presidential candidate's genitals and call him the N-word, can't we see the signs that we're heading in the wrong direction? We have become desensitized to everything, from profanity to pornography.

Today's America is certainly not the one in which I grew up during the '40s and '50s. Profanity of any sort was wrong back then and frowned upon by most in private or public use. Today profanity has become a positive form of expression, with studies even showing that it releases stress and boosts morale at the workplace!

I genuinely believe we can do better. I believe we must do better. We need to leave a better legacy of decency, civility and respect for future generations. I believe we need to give them our best, and our best must be more than justifying the use of derogatory language based upon cultural or racial relativity or even freedom of speech. If we're going to reverse negative trends among our youth, it's going to begin with us establishing a better model for them of how we treat and speak about others.

Whoopi proposed that we must find a "new way to move forward." I propose that that new way is not new at all, but an old way that has been discarded and forgotten. It is a way that simultaneously addresses equality, respect and decency. It is a way that was promoted by America's Founders and eventually resulted in increased unity and civility across the land. And it is also a way that I devote an entire chapter to in my upcoming book, "Black Belt Patriotism." The chapter's titled "Reclaim the value of human life." Here's a little of what I say in it:

"The Founders believed equality would give legs to freedom. As John Adams said, 'We should begin by setting conscience free. When all men of all religions … shall enjoy equal liberty, property, and an equal chance for honors and power … we may expect that improvements will be made in the human character and the state of society.'

"The Founders knew that America was not perfect. Slavery, in particular, troubled the consciences of many of them. … Nevertheless, our Founders believed there was something inherent in humanity that called it to a higher purpose. For all the shortcomings of early American society, the remedy was always there -- expressed in the founding documents of our nation. The Declaration of Independence set America's course. Though we have sometimes drifted from its highest principles, all Americans have ever had to do was steer by its compass to acknowledge or rediscover the inherent equality of slaves, women, the poor, Indians, and the unborn. All were -- and are -- children of God, endowed by their creator with 'certain unalienable rights.' …

"The Founders could not immediately abolish slavery. It was too entrenched in the economy of the South, but the Declaration eroded its foundations in a way that made its end inevitable. That 'all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights' is one of the most powerful principles ever enunciated in the history of politics."

And that power can be unleashed again to help us in our day. The sooner we get back to our Founders' words, our country's original calling, the sooner we will start treating one another (red, yellow, black and white) as our Founders' prescribed and the sooner we will get beyond these slanderous debates about language and humanity. It's time to grow up, America -- to move beyond the arguments of yesteryear. You're older than 200 now. It's time to act your age.

From My Viewpoint . . . Jewel Adams

Today is my birthday . . . I'm 45 years old! When did that happen? I had no problem turning 30, no problem turning 40 . . . but apparently I'm stuttering at turning 45. Sheesh! I hope my husband is ready to take me to Brick Oven this afternoon, I really feel in need of my yearly hot fudge brownie sundae! Must . . . have . . . it . . . Yeah, I don't drown my sorrows in booze, but hot fudge. Once a year it's all mine!

Anyway, I digress. I have a friend who inspires me regularly. There are times when she sends an email out that simply blows me away with the basic truths contained within. This is one of those.

Author, Jewel Adams, addressed a topic on one of our email lists. I asked permission to reprint what she wrote her. The topic? Being black within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:

I joined the Church in January of 1986 after missionaries found me for the second time. The first time I was so stoned and wasted that those poor young men knew they wouldn't get anywhere with me.

I got married my first time when I was sixteen years old. I didn't love him, I just wanted to get a break from my alcoholic mother. Two years later, Isaiah, the guy I married, went swimming one day, caught a cramp and drowned. I was a widow at 18. The insurance money I received from his death, which was more money than I'd ever had in my life, fueled my drug and alcohol addiction.

Anyway, it took friends and family coming out of the woodwork and bleeding me dry, thus placing me back in a housing project, married to another man I didn't love ( drugs and alcohol were all we had in common) with two babies before I was humble enough to listen when that second set of missionaries came knocking on my door. From the moment they began teaching me that first discussion, I knew the gospel was true, and despite still fighting my addiction, I was baptized. After the life I'd lived, to truly know that I had a Father in Heaven who loved me was the greatest of gifts.

Friends, or rather so-called friends, began to pester me with questions about how I could join a racist church. Finally my manager at work cornered me one day and asked me how I could join a church where for a long time the whites could hold the priesthood and not the blacks, and you know, to this day it still amazes me how quickly that answer came to me. My answer?

The blacks were not ready and the whites were not ready. A change of that magnitude would have completely torn the Church in two. There is a time for everything and the Lord knew what He was doing. I have no doubt. I never have and I never will.

Until the black members get rid of the chip some of us wear on our shoulder, stop questioning the Lord and start trusting in Him and his wisdom, they, not we, will never be content. That's why things like this bug me so.

I look at the blacks in Africa who had so much faith and waited so long for the gospel. I admire them for their unquestioning faith and their strength. And I adore Jane Manning because she never expected to be given anything because of the color of her skin.

Now, as for a prominent black in the Church, in some ways, I think he has a little Al Sharpton in him. I could be wrong, but based on what I have observed that's my opinion. I met the man and was not impressed.

I had the opportunity to attend a Genesis meeting once and I DID NOT like it, so I never went back, and I'll tell you why. In that chapel I saw more chips weighing down shoulders than I had seen since leaving North Carolina. Some people stood and talked about how they never felt comfortable or at home in their own wards because they had nothing in common with the ward members and that's why they were so grateful to be able to come to Genesis.

They didn't even give the members of their home ward a chance to get to know them. I mean, we're all different. Skin color has nothing to do with it. If you want to get to know people you have to open up and let them in. Personally I have felt comfortable in every single ward I have ever been in and I have made too many friends to count. You only get out what you put in.

I know that once upon a time Genesis was a very good thing and was both inspired and needed, but I think in some ways it has become a crutch. The black friend I went with asked me why I wouldn't go back to a meeting with her. I told her I didn't need it. My ward, no matter what ward I'm in, is my family. I'm comfortable, I'm happy, and I don't need the color of my skin validated by a group. I mean, I look at myself in the mirror everyday. I know I'm black and I love my heritage, but so do other races, right?

Sure, there probably are some racist people in the Church, but there are racist people in every church. I have yet to experience that in the Mormon church, but I am not there for the people. I am there for me, my family, and the Lord.

Black members need to focus on what is important, that being the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are all born to trial and all of our trials are different, but what we do with those trials will set our paths in this life. I saw and experienced a lot of things growing up, things that no child should have to see or experience. But, looking back on all I have been blessed with and the glorious gifts that have been given to me because of those trials, I wouldn't want a single thing changed.

I appreciate you guys for putting up with my ramblings and never judging me. You are friends in the truest sense of the word, but sometimes I have to let loose these little cannons and hope the shots don't offend anyone.

No matter what has happened in the past, no matter what race, creed, color, or nationality we are, God is perfect, He knows what He's doing, and He never makes mistakes.

Isn't that what it really boils down to? Not concentrating on our differences, but concentrating on our commonalities . . . we are all children of God. We are beloved of Him. And, each and everyone of us have a mission or missions in life pertinent to the Kingdom of God being spread across the world to every kindred, tongue and people.

Those who place a magnifying glass on the past, determined to weed out every little offense, will drown in those historical offenses. In so doing, they miss the unmitigated joy of standing tall with all those follow God, their eyes single to His living prophet, Thomas S. Monson, and the peace of mind that comes for knowing mortality is but a brief moment in an eternal life.

Review of The Santa Letters by Stacy Gooch-Anderson

I just read the most incredible book entitled The Santa Letters (I will link this to Amazon as soon as it is available) by Stacy Gooch-Anderson, scheduled for publication in September of 2008 by Sweetwater Books, an imprint of Cedar Fort.

What a fantastic story! I thought to pick it up and read the first couple of chapters while I was waiting for my husband to get ready. The book went everywhere with us that day. It took me about 2 to 3 hours to finish it. I kept my nose in the book as we drove to the hospital for Alvin's check up, scarcely looking up as we pulled into the building where the Transplant Team is located.

Here's a little synopsis of the story:
One year ago on Christmas Eve, William died. For Emma, the hit-and-run driver killed more than her husband; he killed her joy in life itself.

Now, as Christmas approaches again, Emma Jensen finds herself sinking into depression that nothing can breach--not her job, not her love for her children, and certainly not the season. Money is tight, and emotions are taut, and this year Christmas will be a meager, empty, and painful experience. Only six-year-old McKenna believes in miracles and the magic of Christmas. The rest of the family knows that Christmas can never be the same.

But when a mysterious package and an ornate letter arrive on the doorstep, things begin to change. Each day, a package and a letter signed "Santa" arrive for the family, and together they come to understand that the joy of Christmas does not have to be lost forever, and that God's love can heal any wound, no matter how deep.

The Santa Letters will take the Jensens on a journey through a Christmas experience that will have the power to heal them all.
This is a book that will require the reader to have a box of tissues close at hand because you're going to laugh and you're going to cry. William being killed by a drunk driver while on his way home from work hit very close to home for me, having lost my brother-in-law that way. So it's possible my emotions were a little closer to the surface from the very beginning. But wow, this book is worth the read, and the tears.

It is an uplifting story that takes the reader through a journey from a dark and desperate place each of us must face eventually in life. Stacy Gooch-Anderson tells an engaging story which inspires the reader to be a better, more considerate person. The story is funny, sad, and poignant, taking this family from despair to peace over the course of the two weeks prior to Christmas.

This is a must-buy as well as a must-have for your home library. Every member of the family will enjoy this book. So mark it on your calendar now.

It is a fact that drunk drivers kill a lot of people. Why did you decide to weave your story around a tragedy such as this?
There are two reasons.....

1.) I have a very good friend who lost both of her parents in an accident where the young woman was on a cell phone distracted and ran a red light killing them both. It was heartbreaking for the family especially when they realized that there were no laws governing such occurrences. If a person is killed while the one causing the accident is on a cell phone, it is classified as nothing more than an accident due to distracted driving - same as eating a hamburger or putting on mascara. But with cell phone usage and text messaging on the rise, it was a subject that I felt needed some light shed on it so people can think about the consequences to what may seem to be 'innocent actions'.

2.) Since there are no laws governing cell phone usage (two states are trying but finding much resistance from lobbyists), it was a good scenario in which Guillermo would feel cheated and have a hard time reconciling his loss with his sense of justice.

Was there a particular reason you centered this story around Christmas?

A few years back, my family went through a very difficult time when we found out that two of my sons had been caught in a sexually abusive situation. We'd spent so much money on legal bills to protect their rights and counseling to help them through it that there was not much left over for Christmas. I already felt like a failure as a mother for not having been able to protect them and I did not want Christmas that year to be ruined by the tragedies we'd already faced.

I turned to my scriptures for peace and the message I got was to remember the mission and life of the Savior. I wanted to find a way to share what I had learned with my family and combine all the best of Christmas so I came upon the plan of a "Santa Letter Journey" since my youngest son at that point was five and still needed to feel the magic of Christmas.

That year, instead of celebrating the commercial side of Christmas, we, as a family, found healing through remembering the true gifts, of not only Christmas, but life as "Santa" delivered our letters and surprises every night. And my sons came to understand that they were loved and cherished and could make it through anything if we pulled together as a family. We still cherish the original letters and read them at Christmas time.

That same year, I had a friend who found out what we had been doing and told me that she was going to clobber me if I didn't share the story and challenged me to help others find the true 'gifts' of Christmas. I took her up on it and The Santa Letters was born.

In your book, the Jensen family undergoes the loss of their husband and father. You have interesting interactions within the family, how important do you believe the family unit is within the fabric of modern society.

The best way to explain that is to think of someone trying to stand a toothpick up on its own - it's going to be hard to do without some kind of support system. However, if you bundle a bunch of toothpicks together, they will easily stand and further more, they will be much, much harder to break.

Strong family units are integral to the strength of the individual and with strong individuals bundling together to form secure foundations, we can only grow a stronger community and nation since the strength of such rests upon having rock solid foundations.

Unfortunately,there are some whose cache of blessings do not include a strong family. But those individuals can still create a "bundled" unit gaining strength by creating a family of choice. Although we all are part of a family by blood ties, others can additionally create families by choice in terms of good mentors, friends, teachers, neighbors and advisors until they are able to marry and create their own family units.

This is a very uplifting story, although I went through a lot of tissues to get through it, what message do you want your readers to take away with them?

Hope, forgiveness, healing and redemption are there for anyone who wishes to claim them. The only difference between a lump of coal and a diamond is the heat and pressure it can take - aspire to be something truly shiny!

And, it is impossible to find Christmas under the tree unless one first finds Christmas in their heart. We do this by simply remembering the first fruits and the true gifts of the season.

Yes, "Life is Tough - I Doubt I'll Make it Out Alive (Life's Lessons Learned Through Laughter)" will be out March of 2009 in time for Mother's Day and "The Legend of the Star" will be out for Christmas 2009.

God Is Not Dead



I, too, testify that the heavens are open and Jesus Christ still lives. He was resurrected, breaking the bands of death for all that we might live again. The history of the Jews, The Holy Bible, testifies of His existence, premortal and mortal. The Book of Mormon testifies of Jesus Christ's divinity and His continued existence and willingness to communicate with His servants, the living prophet, Thomas S. Monson, and the apostles of God. You have just heard a living apostle of God, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, testify to you that God lives. Believe, my friends, that God has not turned His back on this world. The better question would be, have you turned your back on Him?

Health Tip: Cinnamon

When my father died, I was privileged to be there. And over the course of the following weeks I stayed with my mother helping through that exceedingly difficult time. We Want Change . . . But Just What Change Is It?

I found a little place on the internet, a website that pulls local stories from all the neighboring communities and gathers them into one place, Ricky Stokes News. This letter to the editor was found on there:

Each year I get to celebrate Independence Day twice. On June 30th I celebrate my independence day, and on July 4th I celebrate Americaʼs. This year is special, because it marks the 40th anniversary of my independence.

On June 30, 1968, I escaped Communist Cuba, and a few months later, I was in the United States to stay. That I happened to arrive in Richmond on Thanksgiving Day is just part of the story, but I digress.

I've thought a lot about the anniversary this year. The election-year rhetoric has made me think a lot about Cuba and what transpired there.

In the late 1950s, most Cubans thought Cuba needed a change, and they were right. So when a young leader came along, every Cuban was at least receptive. 'When the young leader spoke eloquently and passionately and denounced the old system, the press fell in love with him. They never questioned who his friends were or what he really believed in. When he said he would help the farmers and the poor and bring free medical care and education to all, everyone followed. When he said he would bring justice and equality to all, everyone said, 'Praise the Lord.' And when the young leader said, 'I will be for change and I'll bring you change,' everyone yelled, 'Viva Fidel!'

But nobody asked about the change, so by the time the executioner's guns went silent, the people's guns had been taken away. By the time everyone was equal, they were equally poor, hungry, and oppressed. By the time everyone received their free education, it was worth nothing. By the time the press noticed, it was too late, because they were now working for him. By the time the change was finally implemented, Cuba had been knocked down a couple of notches to Third-World status. By the time the change was over, more than a million people had taken to boats, rafts, and inner tubes. You can call those who made it ashore anywhere else in the world the most fortunate Cubans. And now I'm back to the beginning of my story.

Luckily, we would never fall in America for a young leader who promised change without asking: What change? How will you carry it out? What will it cost America?


Would we?

I have been saying this for over a year now. But I have not said it with Mr. Alvarez's experience, but have spoken through the voice of experience of my father. Adolf Hitler or Fidel Castro . . . Barack Obama's rhetoric is identical. America, with Barack Obama's plan WE WILL quickly fall to 3rd World status. Mitt Romney repeated this warning over and over and was ignored, and yet now we stand with two men as our options for president. With Barack Obama there will be no America left when Mitt Romney becomes president. With John McCain there may be a semblance.

OR, we can stand up and be counted. Flood Congress and the Senate with phone calls, emails and faxes and make our voices be heard. We will not turn from the Constitution of the United States. We will not turn from the America hundreds of thousands of men and women died to give us. We will not embrace socialism or communism, but will ring the cry of democracy across the world.

But we must get up from the arm chair. We must step out from the fields. We must walk from the office buildings, malls and theaters, and we must come together as one voice . . . We are Americans and we will take this nation back if the government will accept its role as laid out by the Founding Fathers. We take to heart, and will fight to defend, the opening lines of the Constitution of the United States: "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

That is all our federal government is supposed to do, nothing else. Take a look at what the American government has evolved into. They have overstepped their boundaries when they refused to end our dependence on foreign oil. They have overstepped their boundaries when they come into our homes and tell us how to raise our children. They have overstepped their boundaries when they ignore the cry of the American people and refuse to secure our borders. They have overstepped their boundaries when they tax businesses into non-existence. They have overstepped their boundaries at every turn and in every home and business.

We will not throw our freedom away for comfort.

We will not throw our ability to choose away for a slick smile.

We will not sacrifice our children to the "government" for their education.

We will not become those countries we have struggled so hard to save.

We are Americans and we will no longer be quiet. If Washington, D.C. continues to ignore our wishes, then every single one of them must lose their jobs in November. If your Congressman is not defending the Constitution with every breath he takes, he must be tossed out of office. If your Senator will not secure our borders, return states rights to the states and approve the drilling for oil in our reserves, they must be tossed out of office. If Barack Obama wants to turn this nation into a federal government controlled nation, and he has plainly stated he does, send him home to Chicago. He's the last thing we need in Washington. An Obama presidency will destroy America, mark my words.

And if you don't believe me, trust those who have lived through it, like my father and Mr. Alvarez.

In the Midst of a Firestorm - Jeffrey Denning

Several weeks ago I received an email from an American soldier serving in Iraq. Jeffrey Denning's time was winding down and he'd been searching Blogland for other LDS blogs. He found mine and I'm glad he did. I dropped by his blog, did some reading and was very impressed so I contacted him back.

The bio on his blog reads the following:

I write for the Aviation Security Community for a major newspaper on line. (See the link on the left hand side.) I've worked as a private security specialist for the U.S.-led 'Roadmap to Mideast Peace' in Israel and Palestine, I serve on the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS) Just War Theory Project, and I've worked as a SWAT team leader and a post-9/11 Federal Air Marshal. My master's degree is in Military Studies and terrorism, with a concentration in special operations, counterinsurgency and irregular warfare. I've lectured on topics from school shootings to identifying suicidal terrorists, and I just returned from a deployment to Iraq with the U.S. Army Reserves. I've been Scuba diving in the Red Sea and have eaten Belgium waffles in Brussels. I've trained with members of the U.S. Olympic Ski Team, and have led horseback riding trips in Colorado. I'm a professionally-trained driver, and I've gone free-fall skydiving for fun. Fun facts: I'm a FBI-trained crisis negotiator, I know American Sign Language, and my wife and I have nearly enough kids to start a basketball team!

He was interested in networking with other authors and we began a dialog which has emerged into the beginnings of a friendship. He's a public speaker, an author and a former Air Marshal, which is the center of the firestorm he now finds himself in.

CNN, the Washington Times and local newspapers, all have contacted and interviewed Denning. Why, you might ask, is this humble soldier suddenly in the spotlight? He received an email, in Iraq, from a former colleague at the Air Marshals Service. He forwarded it on to former and current Marshals and left it at that.

Upon returning home the TSA interrogated him and his family to find out where the email came from. (You can read the email here.) In CNN's interview, Denning was quoted as saying:

Nothing in the e-mail contained sensitive security information, Denning said, nor did it encourage anyone to disclose information that could endanger the public.

"I was petrified," Denning said of Neiderer's phone call, explaining how he contacted CNN full of dismay that the TSA was harassing him and his family to find out which of his former colleagues had talked to the media.

"In Iraq, there were a lot of dangerous things, but never have I been so scared [as] when the federal government called me on my home phone and said I want to know about your personal e-mail account and what you have been sending."

TSA's Hawley refused repeated requests to be interviewed by CNN. Neiderer did not return repeated calls or e-mails. ("TSA Launches Leak Investigation" by Drew Griffin and Kathleen Johnston, CNN Special Investigation Unit, 14 July 2008)

So, what does this boil down to? The federal government was tracking all of Jeff's email correspondence. I guess they read mine too, but they can't have found much because our communiques revolved around writing.

Anyway, Jeff agreed to be interviewed about this whole mess, so settle in and let's hear it from the man himself:

Jeff, I ran across your blog after you emailed me from Iraq. You mentioned you were searching Blogland for clean and LDS blogs, can you tell me why you were searching for these blogs?

Years ago I began committing quotes to memory. I’ve memorized things from Ralph Waldo Emerson to Dr. Seuss. I especially have enjoyed studying the words of modern-day prophets and apostles. While preparing to give a talk to LDS service members in Iraq, I wanted to get a reference to a quote I recalled by a late Church leader. While Google-ing the quote to find the exact reference, I came across several LDS blogs and I began to search through them. Your blog really caught my attention.

It’s wonderful that we can share the gospel using the Internet, as Elder M. Russell Ballard encouraged us to do recently. Millions can be blessed as a result. I know I have been blessed by learning of your testimony as well as the testimony of many others. I started my blog while in Iraq. I’ve had many friends of mine of many other faiths who’ve learned something about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by reading my blog, and I’m happy I can share with others what is most important to me.

Furthermore, some of the attention I’ve received recently from the CNN interview or from the Aviation Security blog I co-write for The Washington Times has prompted many more to read my personal blog.

Will you please tell us a little bit about your history before you headed to Iraq as an officer in the US Army Reserves, clearing bombs from the roadways?

After serving a full-time mission, I had a deep desire to work as a protection specialist – a bodyguard – for members of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve. My great-great-great grandfather, Elder Parley P. Pratt, was murdered while serving in the Holy Apostleship, as was – of course – Joseph and Hyrum Smith, and others. While the threat against Church leaders today isn’t the same as it was back then, there still are many people who’d harm them if given the chance.

When I visited the office of Church security shortly after my mission, I was turned away and lovingly encouraged to get some experience and education. Soon, I enlisted into the US Army Military Police Corps where I supervised a full-time SWAT team. On September 11th, 2001, I was working as a Dallas police officer. When I watched the second plane hit the World Trade Center tower, I knew it was Middle Eastern terrorism. Feeling a need to do more to counter terrorism and terrorists, something of which I had a unique interest in long before 9/11, I applied to the Federal Air Marshal Service. While waiting to hear back I took a position protecting U.S. diplomats in Israel and Palestine with the U.S.-led ‘Roadmap to Mideast Peace.’
Living in Jerusalem and working as a security specialist I couldn’t help but think of the prophecies of the future. According to Revelation chapter 11, in the last days two prophets shall be slain in Jerusalem. I must admit, I’ve pondered that more than most.

Fortunately, I’ve been able to help Church security officials a couple times provide close protection security for both President Gordon B. Hinckley and President Thomas S. Monson. Of course, while all these life experiences are neat and wonderful, the most important is my family.

Before going to Iraq, you spent some years in the Federal Air Marshal Service, can you tell us why decided to take this job?

When the Department of Homeland Security finally contacted me and offered me a job as a Federal Air Marshal (FAM), I was living and working in Jerusalem. That particular experience was something I had dreamed about doing for many years.

Initially I turned down the job offer as an air marshal, but I had a deep impression afterwards that I needed to call them back and accept the position. One of the ways we can know it’s the Holy Ghost whispering to our hearts and minds to do something and not our own will is if the answer to our prayer is contrary to our personal desires. That was what I experienced in taking the job as a FAM. I’m convinced the Lord wanted me to take the position. And I didn’t ask why, I just did it. I received personal revelation and I acted on it. Without exception, every time I’ve followed that pattern, my life has been blessed as a result.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper covered a story about problems with the Federal Air Marshal Service. To my surprise, you were at the center of it but not for the reason people might think. Would you please tell us a little more about that?

First let me say it’s rather shocking to be the lead story of CNN.com all day long, and then be on Anderson Cooper 360. I never thought what I experienced would get so much attention, but then again, what happened to me was pretty outrageous.

While in Iraq I received an email from a colleague asking for any current or former FAMs willing to speak to CNN. After several years of agency mismanagement and senior managers unwilling to listen to the air marshals’ very real security concerns, whistleblowers decided to go public. Though I was very concerned, I didn’t ever go public nor did I ever ‘leak’ anything.

Subsequently I forwarded the email message I received from my personal email account. The week I arrived home from Iraq, an investigator from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) called me at home and asked about my personal email account and what I had been sending – and from whom. As you can probably imagine, when a special agent from the federal government calls your home asking about your private emails, it’s more than unnerving. Of course, at this point I hadn’t been a FAM in over a year, having left the nascent agency on good terms.

This email you received and forwarded, from Iraq, stirred up quite a fuss in many arenas. Why did you decide to go public with the contents of that email?

Silently, I stood by in disgust at the incredible corruption and mismanagement I had witnessed in the FAM Service, hoping things would change. They never did.

We were charged with stopping terrorists. As armed, undercover federal law enforcement officers on board airplanes, we knew more than anyone that the policies and protocols we were forced to abide by totally disabled us while enabling any would-be terrorists. We couldn’t do our job and the flying public was not safe. Inevitably, our national security was in jeopardy.

I often felt like Captain Moroni who wrote a scathing letter to the government leader, Pahoran, as recorded in The Book of Mormon. The military leader needed support and provisions, he wrote, or he and his men would rebel and fight against the government leaders. Fortunately, Pahoran listened and humbly replied.

When the government and the director of the FAM Service at the time wouldn’t change things, I felt I should go public and write about the failures in aviation security. I hoped that doing so would change things for the better. We’re still not where we should be. We’re not prepared to stop terrorists and flying is just a hassle. It shouldn’t be.

It’s impossible to describe the challenge of someone in my shoes to go public. I’ve been involved in a lot of specialized work and unique professional circles. Often those who go public get shunned, ostracized or blacklisted by those who were once their colleagues and brothers-in-arms. After many months of prayer and pondering, I decided to fast and pray about my decision to go public – this was before leaving the Federal Air Marshal Service in 2007. After consulting with a trusted friend and telling the Lord I would do His will, I attended the temple in a prayerful attitude. My answer was clear. I knew I must go public and not ask again.

So, when the opportunity presented itself to speak with CNN after this extraordinary incident, I didn’t hesitate. CNN was willing to expose the corruption and failures of aviation security that the federal government was charged to protect. And not only that, but they were willing to expose the great lengths that the TSA would go to in order to stop whistleblowers.

What has this done to your personal life, your family?

Well, I now have a few people who never want to speak with me again. Some have sent me hate mail. Some talk ill of me on line. But for the most part, people are supportive, including many air marshals or former air marshals who know what I know.

Recently I’ve thought of Columbus, the Wright Brothers, Joseph Smith, the Prophet, and others. Anyone who speaks up will have opposition. As Lehi taught, there will be opposition in all things. When we speak up – in my case, literally – there will be voices who oppose us. But I’m grateful for the experience. I feel more refined and strengthened as a man. I am more determined than ever to protect others and help keep innocent people safe from terrorism and all kinds of crime and trouble.

Of course, the kids thought it was neat to be on CNN. And my wife is simply wonderful. The government investigator initially contacted her while I was in Iraq. Of course, the whole ordeal made her uncomfortable and she continues to be reminded of it by a documentary film interview, the CNN interview, and so forth, but she’s been supportive of me during all of this. Prayer has been a blessing during our whole married life and this period is no different. As President Monson once said, “Prayer is the passport to peace.” (Thomas S. Monson, “In Harm’s Way,” Ensign, May 1998, 46.)

What is the key lesson you’d like everyone to learn from this?

A message especially to the youth: be strong, be courageous. Don’t do something just because it’s popular or faddish. On the corollary, if you should do something you know you should, dare to do it. Stand up for what is right. Do what’s right and you’ll have no need to fear. Be an example and a leader in all you do, because inevitably someone will be watching you – no pun at the government’s expense intended.

There are some major Constitutional rights being violated in this scenario, will you tell us a little about this?

I’m not going to attempt an interpretation of that here. I think a more important question is what are we – you and I – going to do to contribute to our communities and our beloved nation? One of the many things I love about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is our devotion to the U.S. Constitution. Joseph Smith taught that we should befriend it; that the Lord caused it to be established. He also prayed that the honorable and noble principles of the Constitution should be maintained forever. (See D&C 98:5-6; 101:77, 80; 109:54.)

The attack on our cherished values, particularly the attack on families, and other moral principles are growing. There is a bold movement to destroy religion and goodness. To that we should recall what John Adams, the second President of the United States and signer of the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights stated. Said he, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

Those are words to live by.

To borrow the words of another, there is great strength in a nation on its knees. That’s something we all felt and witnessed in the days following the 9/11 tragedy. We could all be a little better, a little kinder.

Will you please share with us some of your experiences as a Federal Air Marshal, flying the “friendly” skies in order to keep American safe?

Once Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve, and his wife, walked on the plane I was covering. There I was sitting with a concealed pistol and I had just lied to the person sitting next to me about my job. The 9/11 hijackers looked like normal, everyday passengers prior to their deadly deed. Working undercover sometimes I had to lie. If I told the wrong person, or if a would-be terrorist overheard me, I would be attacked first. And, trust me, there are bad guys still probing the airlines and looking for weak links to attack.

Nevertheless, I was thrilled to see Elder Oaks. There he was – one of my heroes. Not only was he someone I respected as a person and a professional in jurisprudence, but I sustained him as a prophet, seer and revelator. I thought of the many years of preparation I had had since first going to Church security and asking to help protect these good men. I thought about the dichotomy of lying and how I justified it. Among the simplest of answers was that given by my dear friend and home teaching companion in Jerusalem, the first Patriarch to serve in the Holy Land since the Restoration of the gospel who was later called as the Alberta, Canada temple president, Brother Robert S. Patterson. He reassured that the Spirit would let me know when to divulge the clandestine nature of my job.

Further, as I curiously watched Elder Oaks, I wondered what he’d think of me if I had to violently counter-attack a person trying to take over the plane. I knew what he’d think from a legal perspective as a former attorney and judge. I knew the law well.

I knew what he’d think from an ecclesiastical standpoint. In fact, I recalled that he had at that point recently stated that, “[W]e believe the commandment [‘thou shalt not kill’] is not violated by killing pursuant to a lawful order in an armed conflict.” (“The Dedication of a Lifetime,” CES Fireside for Young Adults, Oakland CA, May 1, 2005.) But what would he think as a man and a Church leader if I had to do those things that I had been trained to do?

It’s that psychological and spiritual aspect to being a modern-day warrior that has taken so many years to learn. That’s one of the reasons I’m eager to write a book for LDS service members and those in law enforcement or private security – or for those who are considering an occupation in such a field.

What last thoughts would you like to share with the readers of my blog, who happen to be amongst the best in the world?

I’ve had many special experiences over my lifetime. I’ve been supported and guided by Divine intervention. I’ve been protected from physical and spiritual harm. I’ve prayed for help to perform well in my work and I’ve been blessed as a result. Interesting, isn’t it? Yes, I feel the Lord wants me to be good at my profession even though it involves what has been described in The Book of Mormon as “the work of death.” But thankfully, I haven’t had to do that.

Finally, as a former Federal Air Marshal and a concerned private citizen, I am still eager to help keep our nation’s skies safe. That’s the reason I began writing an Aviation Security blog for The Washington Times community, found here.

And there ends the interview with Jeffrey Denning. Can I tell those reading my blog, this man is tremendous and I feel honored to know him. It takes great courage and strength to take a stance against such a powerful institution. Yes, there are those who have turned from him, but they are people of no consequence or character. For one does not abandon a patriot standing for truth, and that is what Jeffrey Denning is . . . it will be my great honor to assist him in getting his book published. For I have no doubt it will be a book which strikes at the heart of those trying to destroy this nation. If he has a 1/5 of the writing skill his ancestor, Parley P. Pratt, had, then we are in for a great treat.

Review of The Last Oracle by James Rollins

James Rollins is one of my absolute favorite of authors and I anxiously awaited the release of this book after turning the last page of The Judas Strain, which I reviewed on July 27, 2007. Rollins did not disappoint!

The Last Oracle picks up where The Judas Strain left off. From Rollins website I pulled this description, most of which is also the backliner:

I love the way Rollins takes an incident in history and creates a fascinating, page-turner which you will not put down until you have turned that last page. Yeah, that's what I did. I started The Last Oracle while I was waiting in line to see Glenn Beck Live. I stopped only to watch the show, and it was well worth watching, then crawled into bed as soon as I got home and finished reading it.

This man can write! He takes us deep into the mountains of Russia, not far from Chernobyl, tosses meglomaniac Russian determined to rule the world, his crazy mother, secret combinations and organizations, gypsies or Romani and the Greek Oracles at Delphi. Mix it all up with the SIGMA force and you've got a ride that will keep you breathless to the end.

This book is a must read. I thoroughly and completely enjoyed it. And if you've never read James Rollins before then be prepared. Because you're going to head straight to the bookstore or Amazon.com to purchase all his other books. And believe me, you'll like them all. And they'll be a wonderful addition to your home library.

What is a Conservative . . . according to Glenn Beck

My sister, Heather, and I went to see Glenn Beck Live, which was simulcast across 350 theaters, at Provo Town Centre last Thursday. What an incredible experience. I laughed, I cried and pride for America burned deeply and strongly in my heart. My friends, if you ever get the chance to see this man's live show you will not want to miss it. It so very NOT PC.

So many things he said literally rocked my heart. Yes, his language can be a little salty but not bad. Meaning he pretty much stuck to h***, d*** and a**. And he used those very sparingly.

Apparently someone called into this show last week and asked him, "What is a Conservative?"

Glenn responded,

"A conservative is a person who uses common sense. A conservative is a person who believes in dreams. A conservative is a person who has taken him/herself from nothing and reached the heights of success. A conservative is a person who has failed, picked themselves up by the bootstraps and kept moving forward. A conservative is a person who believes the Constitution of the United States is a living and divinely inspire document. A conservative is a person who believes firmly in the America the Founding Fathers set up. A conservative is a person who believes in freedom, personal responsibility and God."

Yup, that's a conservative all right. I cannot tell you how privileged I feel to be an America. It is wrong that people don't like it when we say "I am an American and proud of it!" This nation is one of the most blessed on the face of the earth. Glenn said last night that even the most poverty stricken child born into this nation is still far luckier than anyone born outside of this nation.

You might be startled by this statement, but he said it with tears in his eyes and his voice choked up. He did not state it as an elitist. But as man who understand the dreams, hopes, possibilities and responsibilities of being an America. Eight years ago he had trouble meeting the $695 rent on his tiny apartment in Hamden, Connecticut. Last week, he was able to write a check to the Ivy League school of his daughter's choice. (Huge mistake in my opinion, but that's neither here nor there.) This is what America is about. We are allowed to educate ourselves so that we can have the jobs we choose.

Now, if you choose not to finish your high school education, that's up to you. It can, and often will, limit your choices in life. If you choose stop learning the day you leave high school, whether college or self-education, it can and often will, limit your choices in life. But you know what? That's your choice.

Yes, I've heard men say, "Well I got my girlfriend pregnant and we had to get married." Uh huh, you made a choice, to have sex, and paid the consequence. It changed your life and possibilities forever.

Yes, I've heard women say, "Well I got into drugs and had a hard time shaking the addiction." Uh huh, you made a choice and paid the consequence. It changed your life and possibilities forever.

The wonderful thing about America is simply this . . . sometimes even self-sabotage or self-indulgence which results in a course change can still result in wild success. If you're willing to eschew the behavior, pay the price and work your butt off until you've accomplished your dream. Witness, Glenn Beck. Raging alcoholic, his words-not mine, divorce and his world crashing down around him could have, and has for many, marked him as a failure forever. But not in America. He dried up. He changed the man he was into the man he became. He married again and has a family and is very happy. He has a wildly successful radio and t.v. show and tours the country to sold out venues . . . only in America, my friends.
  • Government does not dictate to us what career path we must follow.
  • Government does not dictate to us whether we can leave our neighborhoods and travel sixteen blocks over.
  • Government does not dictate to us what we may say.
  • Government does not dictate to us who we must worship.
  • Government does not dictate to us that we are less than the bugs in the field and therefore are not capable of making our own decisions. (Although, I gotta say--Chico, California may have me on that one. Check out their new "No nuclear detonations within city limits" ordinance. Oh yeah, it'll cost you $500 if you do that . . . so maybe someone does need to do the thinking for them until they've rejoined the human gene pool.)
  • Government does not dictate to us what cars we can drive, how warm we keep our homes and how much we can eat, although Barack Obama would like to change that too.
We inherited a nation of hope, dreams and possibilities. Americans put the first man on the moon, invented the car, the television, the radio, the internet (nope, even Glenn Beck agrees that Al Gore did not invent the internet.) and so much more! Glenn pointed out the millions of people we've saved in the last seven years and the hundreds of millions we've saved in the last century. "We have freed man's mind!" he said.

In this land of the free and home of the brave, and only in America, could God have restored His kingdom on the face of the earth. And yet, after all these years, we are a nation at the brink. But it does not have to be so. The people in Washington D.C. have no idea, nor do they care to, what is important to the American people. My Congressman is no longer on the table, so at this point, I say wipe 'em all out. Uh, metaphorcally speaking. Meaning, they all need to lose their jobs in September.
  • Under our Democrat controlled Congress and Senate our gas prices have soared.
  • Under our Democrat controlled Congress and Senate our economy is tanking.
  • Under our Democrat controlled Congress and Senate proposed tax hikes are underway. Barack Obama wants to raise individual income taxes, the capital gains tax, he wants to keep the death tax, he wants to raise Social Security taxes. Oh yeah, that's going to make it better. Bankruptcies will soar far higher than they are right now under his presidency.
  • Our Democrat controlled Congress and Senate have stated: No new drilling or refineries will be built. Barack Obama is opposed to nuclear energy and he wants to tax natural gas and coal, our major domestic energy sources. (Oh, because we don't pay enough tax on those already!)
President Bush said: "When Congress lifts the legislative ban, I will lift the executive prohibition... The only thing standing between the American people and these vast oil resources is action from the U.S. Congress. Now the ball is squarely in Congress' court... For years, my administration has been calling on Congress to expand domestic oil production. Unfortunately, Democrats on Capitol Hill have rejected virtually every proposal. And now Americans are paying at the pump."

Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Majority Leader and traitor to the American people was reported in an article by CQ Politics:

"House and Senate Democratic leaders plan to bring energy legislation to the floor this week, using procedural tactics designed to block Republicans from offering amendments that would lift the drilling ban."

"In the Senate, Democrats hope to take up as early as Wednesday a still-un-drafted bill that would tighten regulation of speculation in energy futures, which some lawmakers contend adds as much as 30 percent to the price of crude oil.

"Majority Leader Harry Reid , D-Nevada, said he would block any effort to propose amendments to the bill that did not deal directly with the speculation issue."

So, Senator Reid has made the decision that there will be no relief at the gas pumps. This day has long been expected, when America's reliance on foreign industry would come back to bite us on the butt. Well, it's happened. Senator Reid and every other Democrat is doing the biting.
  • Under our Democrat controlled Congress and Senate two universities can now drill for . . . wait for it . . . ice in ANWR to see what happens when it is exposed to heat. (I do not lie.) But there will be no drilling for oil to free us from dependence on foreign oil.
America can be turned around. She can be saved. Her Constitution can be restored . . . but only if we stand up and make our voices heard at the polls in November. A hue and cry so loud it reaches the heavens is the only thing which will stop our current Congress from destroying all that we hold so dear. Your politicians DO NOT KNOW BETTER THAN YOU. (Again, unless your Chico, CA.) The time for turning our backs, or sticking our heads in the sand is gone. We must be heard and we must demand our politicians respond accordingly.
  • The Fairness Doctrine MUST be struck down. If it is not, freedom of speech is forever gone. And you do need to contact your congressman tomorrow on this one.
  • The southern border fences must be built. Along with those seeking a better life, our enemies and criminals are pouring over the border unchecked. Latin and South American gangs, drugs and illegal arms are pouring over the border completely intact, by the tens of thousands.
  • Current illegal immigrants must pay a fine, register themselves into the system by paying taxes, social security, etc. for five years and then get in the back of the line for citizenship.
  • We MUST drill for oil off our shores, in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming, in ANWR, thereby ending our dependence on foreign oil.
  • We MUST develop SENSIBLE alternate energy and fuel sources.
  • We MUST become a literate people once again. A literate nation always remains a superpower.

My friends, it is up to us. This nation that we love so fiercely can and must be saved. Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh echo this cry daily on radio and television. Prophets and apostles across the ages have begged for this promised land, that her people might always be worthy of her great promise. And I beg of you this day: Stand and be counted, stand and be heard, please, stand for what you believe.

Dinner Tightens Family Bonds

Gathering around the table for family dinner is something that, for too many homes, has gone the way of the past. I find this very sad. Looking back over the years I grew up I recall many a conversation, many a problem being solved, much family history being learned, all around the dinner table.

No matter what our schedules were, we had to be home and up to the dinner table by 6:00 p.m. Oh, concerts or games were the exception, then dinner was at 5:00 p.m. My mother was firm on that.

There's a lot of cementing of family bonds around the dinner table. Whomever cooked, whether it be mother, father or teenager, there is care and love which goes into the preparation of that meal. Much thought is poured into the nutrition, taste and edible nature of the meal. And from the one who benefited from all that great food, I can say it taste good! For my family, I even go as far as to make certain there are a plethora of colors on the dinner plate when it is filled.

For example, let's say spaghetti is on the menu. I would add corn, green salad and garlic toast -- red, yellow, green and yellow/white. A beautiful picture as well as a delicious one. I carefully plate the food (yes, I love Food Network and it has changed the way I speak about food) and arrange things in the most attractive fashion.

I care that much. My husband always says to me, "Wow, that looks amazing, sweetheart," and then he digs in. I'm not sure my nephew notices the artistic arrangement of the food, he simply digs in and is grateful for the food. I get just as much satisfaction from the quick disappearance of the food as I do from the making of it.

Here is the recipe for one of our favorite treats:

Chocolate Chip/Butterscotch Chip Cookies

2 Cubes of Butter (1 Cup)
3/4 C. Brown Sugar
3/4 C. White Sugar

Beat until creamy. Add:

2 Eggs
1 t. Salt
1 t. Baking Soda
1 t. Vanilla

Beat until thoroughly mixed.

Then Add:

2 3/4 cups White Flour

Mix until thoroughly blended then add 1/2 package Chocolate Chips and 1/2 package Butterscotch Chips, and walnuts (if desired) and mix again.

Using a Melon scoop or a teaspoon, place cookie dough in balls at 1 1/2" to 2" apart.

Heat oven to 375 degrees.
Cook for 8 to 10 minutes (depending on desired consistency.)
