I can barely get through the story and song without crying because it is so beautiful and it means so much to me. Even though my kids are young, they're already learning the importance of our freedoms in this country.
Let Freedom Ring!Rachelle Christensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05522589944408062365noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-738015707983587606.post-2398784325169049302008-07-05T08:25:00.000-06:002008-07-05T08:25:00.000-06:00Candace,I LOVED this post. I saw the fireworks last night, and as I watched, I remembered the bombs they stood for, the heartbreak and eventual glory they represented. Now, after reading your post, those tender feelings have increased and Independence Day still rings in my heart. Like you Teri, if ever I see 'Jay Walking' I get so annoyed. I may only know the first verse of your anthem but I stood with pride and sang with gusto each time we sang it while I was living over there. Of course I feel the same about my own anthem. :o) But "The Star Spangled Banner" will always bring me to tears and fill my heart with pride.

WendyAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16986635883342034311noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-738015707983587606.post-58445152053991951222008-06-30T17:14:00.000-06:002008-06-30T17:14:00.000-06:00I can't sing this anthem without tears either. We, too, stood and sang all verses of Our National Anthem with me feeling SOOO proud of being an American. We also display our flag on all American Holidays. Bob made a special place at the end of my ramp so we can all see it. The last time we had it up, we had been in town, so when we were getting out of the Van, I felt something on my face and realized it was our flag. The thing that really gets me is when we watch Jay Walking on Jay Leno and almost NO ONE knows our National Anthem!!!! How sad is that!!!! I SOOO get chills down my spine and tears in my eyes when I hear our National Anthem being played each time our Olympic Athletes stand up on that podium, knowing how proud these athletes are for representing the greatest country on this great earth. When we stood (I wish I could) to honor our Bagpipes and Color Guard at Sarah's Graduation, I got all choked up. Thank you SOOO very much, dear sweet Candace. And, by the way, for those not living in small towns, you miss out on seeing all the flags waving in the breeze as we go through town to go into town and there are at least 50 of them!!!

Toodles,
TeriAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16986635883342034311noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-738015707983587606.post-75571224553069148622008-06-30T16:30:00.000-06:002008-06-30T16:30:00.000-06:00From author, JoAnn Arnold, also emailed to me in r...From author, JoAnn Arnold, also emailed to me in response to this post:

Candace,

For my book, "Pages From the Past", I read the accounts of Francis Scott Key, and the decision, by a wise president, to claim that this song, would become the National Athem.

It angers me when people complain about the words of that song, saying that they are too violent to be considered our National Anthem.

I believe it was written as a reminder of those who sacrificed their lives and their own freedoms so that we could have ours. She said that during the cannon barrage, one the the cannon balls hit the flag pole. Some of the men ran to hold it up. They were killed by the British fie. More men came to hold up the flag. They were also killed. She said that a third group of men came to hold up the flag and were also killed. When the flag was seen in the morning, it was the partially held up by the bodies of those men who sacrificed their lives to keep the flag from falling. She did not go into details and I am trying to find a historical account so I can find out the details. However, it would make sense that they would do everything in their power to hold the flag up. If it came down, the British would surely has seen it as victory and would have landed troops to take the fort. This is something I'm sure they knew.

Something most people don't think about now is that none of this was scripted. None of these people knew if they were going to succeed, and most feared they wouldn't. As colonials, we lost more battles than we won and the sacrifice was enormous. There were many at that time who worried and complained over the cost in terms of money and lives. It is only because we had providence on our side that we succeeded. Even still it was very difficult and the sacrifice more than once caused our continental generals and leaders to wonder if what they had done would succeed. They never doubted that they were right, only that they would be victorious. The American revolutionary war was won on faith and faith more than anything else.

-Cash Case (www.cashcase.us)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16986635883342034311noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-738015707983587606.post-82312708112481547012008-06-30T15:43:00.000-06:002008-06-30T15:43:00.000-06:00My wife brought my attention to this blog entry of...My wife brought my attention to this blog entry of your Ma'am Candace, she's been a faithful reader of your dream a little dream...

Thnak you for the wonderful thoughts you share.
